Poor Pumpkin! Could this be parasites? Vet thinks maybe....

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

LOL in the past with fecals that I needed doing I took a whole bunch of birds in the cage (non stressed types) and my vet took the poop right from out the cage to put under the microscope. Funny me walking around with a little hamster cage of birds, with no paper and lots of poop. BUT it did help to nail the problem.

I hope your vet manages to find something for you. Something you can treat easily.

Coccidiosis is a common ailment and if caught in time treatable and in the future preventable. The other head shaking thing could be a number of things.
Mites / bacterial infection / normal behavior.... one never knows. I'd lay off adding any extra meds until you have diagnosis.
Lets hope the vet can nail it on the head for you.
Best wishes for his total recovery.
Heya thanks so much! Yeah, there will be lots of fresh poop for her, he does nothing but eat so lots of that! Actually she gave me a vial with liquid that preserves the poop, so I've been collecting it non-stop since Tuesday. Every 10 minutes I am in the tank collecting poop on my fingers. I must really love this bird!!!! :-) He is not head shaking anymore, so it may have been the flashlight bothering him. Will keep a close eye.

I think the only thing that worries me today is the fast breathing. Right now he is going between his pellets and a big piece of mango with powdered bene-bac probiotics on it. He loves mango more than anything I feed him.

Off to the vet soon, I hope the test results come in fast....I can't wait any longer to get this sorted!

He's such a handsome boy...and boy does he eat non-stop, just like you said :( . Hopefully the meds he's on and your vet will help return him to his former self. Just be sure to always quarantine any new birds you bring into your home before adding them to your existing flock. Many times these types of problems are brought in by new birds. Best of luck to you and Pumpkin.

I know isn't he sweet? The eating though, ha ha!
I am so worried about my finch Jasmine, as I had her with him for a while. She seems ok though. So now just focusing on getting Pumpkin better and stuff diagnosed!

It's funny too, apparently everyone at the vet clinic was watching Pumpkin yesterday! LOL! They all loved him there....hopefully this makes them all more attached to him so we can get this sorted ASAP;-) Ha ha!

Well this isn't good....he doesn't really want to eat as much....and now not really at all for the last hour or so. Tail bobbing, not as active as yesterday. I am getting so upset! :-(

*tempted him with some mango. He is taking a few bites, nothing like he used to, but he is eating some. I am seriously going to have a heart attack!*

Thanks Ginene! Well this birdy has me so confused. He started eating again! ARG! Maybe he is normalizing or something?! I am so used to him eating constantly without stopping. I don't want to sound too hopeful, but that would be great. Going to check his poops in a bit, but don't want to disturb him now that he's back at the mango after going to each seed cup to fill up.

This weekend is going to take years off of my life, let me tell you....ha ha!

What I also find strange is that he is drinking lots of water. Not used to that. In the last 2 hours I've seen him take 5 separate trips to the bowl for a few sips....gonna look this one up!

Shame. I hope you manage to get some feed back from vet quickly.

My guess re water is his body is taking strain. Internal organs like kidneys could be taking a hammering from what ever is causing his symptoms. Afraid there is little you can do but wait for the diagnosis.

Well I think his drinking is normal now....maybe he was just thirsty that day! I will keep a close watch. 3-5 days to hear of a diagnosis. ARG!
How often do you think canaries drink?

Ginene wrote: StarSpun...how's pumpkin today??? [-o<
Pumpkin is doing....WELL actually. I hate to say it. It is so confusing though because sometimes I think he's looking worse and then he's looking better again! He's not poofing as much anymore which makes him look thinner, which of course freaks me out and I have to remind myself how big they look when poofed! He eats a lot still but it seems like it's tapered down a bit. For three days in a row now he's given himself a bath in his water dish which makes me REALLY happy to see! He has been grooming, etc.

The one REALLY big change I've noticed is the poop. It's MUCH better than before. Fully formed pretty much with the right amount of urate. I don't know if the cocci-care is doing this or not....but....we'll see. He still tail bobs, especially at night when sleeping. Today his 'squeak' sounded a bit raspy, and now I am wondering if he has a respiratory problem. I will keep everyone posted!!

I still have the Pumpkin Cam up! Right now as I write this is he very tired, he was just hopping around the condo:-)
