Smart Societies
Greetings to all if you Society lovers.
Noticed a cute behaviour today and wondered if anyone else has ever noted this with their Societies.
This morning I gave my finches their salad. They ate quite a bit if it but some was left over. I was busy all day and by this afternoon, noticed that things were getting a little wilted in the veggie department. What caught my attention, was what my smart Socies were doing with the slightly limp greens. Picking up small leaves, they were poking them into their bath water and sitting there watching them. After a while, they would hop to the side if their bath tub and pull out the now slightly refreshed greens and eat them.
Thinking this was just a one time coincidence, I sat back and watched them repeat this over and over again.
It was absolutely fascinating.

Re: Smart Societies
Wow!!!! That is crazy. They really are smart!!!! Well I had a similar scenario . When the lettuce completely wilted , they carried it into their nest, maybe as nesting material?!?! Socieies really are one of the more intelligent species.

Parrots do it all the time so it doesn't surprise me. I find food in the water dishes of my finches all the time and never really thought much about it. Birds are just smart. My parrots always try to make veggie soup.

Re: Smart Societies
Mine have used it for nesting material. So I've switched to broccoli. Not as appealing apparently but just as good to eat. I've not noticed them putting it in the water.
But yes, hookbills dip a lot of their food in their water. Some species more than others. Used to drive me nuts at the pet store. My conure never did though.

I thought there was something wrong with my eyes
Don't feel bad though, it's happened to me a few times, just not so many times in a row.
.
You sure gave me a little laugh there.
To the rest of my Finch Friends.
I watched them again today, this time joined by Luciano (canary). Pick leaf up from plate, put inwater, poke with beak, wait, poke again ( checking for doneness?
) remove from water and enjoy.

Re: Smart Societies
Well it must be like the monkeys on the different islands that all started exhibiting the behavior at the same time. My Societies are now putting their broccoli in the water. It's heavier and tends to sink where they can't get it but they do go back to check on it everyfew minutes until it sinks...
