Breakfast!

We have been having some gorgeous weather for the middle of winter, so I took the camera in with me yesterday morning at breakfast. Everyone is moulting and the gouldian youngsters from last season are getting their adult colour's. They in particular look like train wrecks at the moment

Hoping this season I will get some live and healthy fledgling's from these guys. Last season we got as far as hatching and tossing...


I have honestly had enough of winter now. While it's great having your birds outside in aviary's, it's not that much fun in winter. Especially in the Cape, where it rains a lot. It's dark when I leave in the morning and get home in the evening. At the moment, I only see the birds on weekends. I'm planning a lawn party this summer for when the 'covers' come down

Great pictures! They look happy for the good weather and good food. I know how you feel about winter as I live in an area where we have cold 3/4 of the year.

Those are some awesome birds you have there Rox, I understand your feelings about the weather in the winter, mine have go inside for all winter long, because it can get -15 celcius in the winter where I'm at. And don't even get me started about rain.

I am SO glad we don't get as cold as up north. -15, not a chance!!

I don't mind winter, it's just the lack of day light that get's me. I am so grateful that my mom is interested in the birds (she is retired and lives with me). She does the morning and evening feeds for me during winter and at least I know someone is having a look at them during the day to see that everyone is ok. A downside to aviary's, is that often by the time you see a sick bird, it's too late. Thankfully, I have only lost a handful of birds this winter. Giving the birds an option to go under a heat lamp has made a world of difference!

We are going away for a week in September and my sister and boyfriend are moving in to house sit. First time both my mom and I are away from home at the same time and to say that I am a bit nervous about leaving my pet's is an understatement! Thankfully my sister knows the ropes (well sort of, lol!)
