New Fire Finches sitting on two eggs

Post by ranchnanny » Fri Nov 07, 2014 11:26 pm

Well the male fire finch made a neat nest and his mate has laid 2 eggs =D> and they are taking turns sitting. As far as I know this may be their first clutch so I have my fingers crossed that all goes well.

Will post photos as soon as I can.

How wonderful! Congratulations! My fire finches always laid three or four eggs and raised their young without any problems as long as I was able to supply them with enough mini meal worms. I always offered those in a small plastic cup and one time I watched the male pick up 18 (!) in one fell swoop! It was amazing to see. Both parents took great care of them. The only fledgling I ever lost had fledged just before it got quite cool and rainy. His two siblings were OK, though.
Good luck with them, they are wonderful little birds.

Congratulations on egg babies. I wish the fellow that I got my two boys from would come through with my two girls that I'm waiting for. What size are their eggs, by the way? These guys are so tiny that's it's difficult to visualize such tiny eggs . :-) Goodluck with up coming babies?

ranchnanny - for you to have them breed so soon after you got them is a good indication that they are young and healthy and like their new surroundings. Are the worms you feed them dried or frozen? I always just gave mine live meal worms because it was so easy ( there is a small company about 15 min. away that breeds meal worms, crickets and cockroaches).

Mine absolutely won't touch mealworms. Everything I read puts them at mainly a seed eater. Mine love millett and egg though.

I am feeding them dried worms I won't touch live ones YIKES!

There egg size is similar to Gold Breasted finches.

In my case, I have found the fire finch eggs to be similar in size to the gold breasted waxbills' eggs. They are pretty tiny. I actually expected them to be a bit bigger than that and was surprised at how small they were.
