Zebras dumb or not so dumb...........mmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Post by CHIRP » Sat Mar 07, 2015 11:26 am

Well, I am really amazed.

I have a set of very light light green pale colours, I had them sewn that they slip over the carpet and it slides into the aviary on the floor, then I pull it pull it out each afternoon and sweep it and put back, then change and wash them and so it goes on.......

I found an old bed cover also very light pale green. So, cut it up, my mom took her machine and sew she did.

NOW, I slipped off the cover while the zebra was in the box on eggs, changed it over and slipped the new one in.

Out comes the ZEB after a while, hits the first perch and STRAIGHT AWAY the head goes at an angle, they knew straight away it was new, and the colours were different, they knew.....

It took about 6 hours before the Zebzzzzzzzz hit the floor...........

Amazing that they knew straight away it had chanced, and the colours are nearly the same..........

Hands for the ZEBZZZZZZZZZ =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D>

It makes you wonder how many colours they can see, and how they see them. I know my guys tend to be fairly particular about dish colours, and what goes in which coloured dish.

I tell you, the second the Zebra came out the breeding box, sat on the perch, the head tilted and looked................ if I say it took 5 seconds to notice it is a lot, it was more like 2. Totally amazing how awake they really are to change and something different, my mom says maybe its because they on eggs and are very cautious......... well, whatever but man observant isnt a fair word! =D>

The other day I was at home in the study, my male makes a very high pitched beep, but that day the beep was kind of longer in beeeeeeeeeeeep, if that's the way to try explain the sound, so it went on about 6 times, and it was different, as I have grown to know the sounds and pitches, so I got up and went to the aviary - outside the door a cape dove was at the corner trying to eat seeds from under a castor wheel, and Mr Mechanical was actually making a different sound to normal BEEP, so they have a combination of various language noises for sure the same as us, like HI to a regular person we see all the time, to a HIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!!!!!!!!!!!! to a person you never saw in a year!, the same as they can see colours, that is a fact.

They will give off an alarm call, if there is somethubg the they may consider as out of the ordinary or possibly dangerous.

As to being extremely observant of any , even the tiniest change in their environment, in the wild, their lives and the lives of the rest of their flock depend on it. It's pure instinct.

If I go into one of my aviaries and move a seed container, it is not 2 sec before the birds land and check out the dishes. "What did you bring us to eats?" "What nothing? Are you serious? What the heck did you come in here for?"

Totally!! And Elana, (@lovezebs) I know what you mean about the dish colors. I first started giving my birds "treats' or 'extras' on a blue tupperware cover..... well unbeknownst to me they know color, and once they make up their mind about something they are stubborn, they won't eat anything unless it's out of a blue top...it's better now actually, but I was wondering why they wouldn't eat the treats I was giving them, then of course someone on here mentioned "make sure to put it in a food dish" I thought, hmmmmmmmm.... i immediately went home, changed what I had given them and put it on a blue cover again...and low and behold, they GRUBBED!!!! They do know their stuff, and can be very stubborn about it!!!! However, it is good, cuz now if i really want them to eat something, i put it in blue dish, or shallow cover, (like the lipton ice tea covers) and they fly to it before my hand is out of the cage!!!!
