If It Wasn't For Luciano....

Post by lovezebs » Wed Mar 25, 2015 10:57 am

If It Wasn't For Luciano...

I don't think Tiny Tim and Pokey, would have survived. Luciano, fed them in the nest. Lucian, helped Tiny Tim who was an early, crippled fledgling. Luciano, helped Pokey, who was a late, slightly delayed and challanged youngster. Luciano, has been tirelessly feeding both little guys every waking hour. Luciano, showes them how to eat, what to eat, how to bath, how to fly. He lets them jump all over him (literary).

Sofia (Mom), is feeding herself, and sitting on her lazy feathered butt in the nest. Since Tiny Tim and Pokey have fledged, I've only seen her feed them maybe a dozen times, and not at all lately.

Hooray for Luciano, the best Dad ever. =D> =D> =D> If it wasn't for him, I don't think these two little chickies would have made it.

Ha Steve didn't feed Weaver at all out of the nest - then he was Dad's job! And since Weaver was an only child as well as not being followed up by the usual second or third clutches typical to canaries, Walter still has the instinct to feed, so Weaver - 3 months old - STILL begs and gets fed. He doesn't need it, he's grown and singing beautifully and chasing girls. But he's still a daddy's boy all the way.

I wonder, if maybe this is the Canary way of doing things.

Your Weaver, is one lucky, spoilt little muffin, but at least he's learning good fathering skills.

Did Walter allow Weaver to crawl all over him, jump on his head, and do all those things that puppies do? It's really cute to watch, how tolerant Luchi is with these two, but I have never seen this behavior in birds before.

He still does! Walter lets Weaver do everything, including practice mating on him, without ever batting an eye. He's the best, most tolerant father ever. When he sings, he lets Weaver push right up to his face to listen until he's touching his cheek with his bill, and doesn't even mind - if any other bird invaded his space like that it's war!

Same thing here. Luciano allows no one to get in his face (at one time someone on the Forum, told me that I should keep him seperate, because he was considered 'extremely aggressive'.).

Ha! If they could see him now. These babies can do no wrong. I'm curious to see, if it will stay this way (?)

As yet, I don't know if these toddlers, are boys or girls, but time will tell. When they reach maturity, it may change the dynamics, but we shall see.

I'm trying very hard to catch a front picture of a baby Canary beggibg, but they won't sit still long enough.

Canaries are generally very good parents and despite having a reputation of being aggressive with each other, they are very tolerant with their chicks.....until the next year's breeding season :) . I love watching them raise their babies. My male didn't feed, but a lot do once the babies leave the nest. I love the little begging dance!

Hi guys, my Daryl (Strawberry) was also pretty much the one who fed the chicks once they fledged. Madame Darlene washed her wings of them, checked out the old nest, figured it was good for another go around and promptly laid another egg!
These strawberries are amazing: once they have eggs, they sit so tightly that I would actually have to put my hand on top of their nest to make them leave. Haven't had the heart to do that yet, so I have no idea how many eggs are in there. At this point, I might as well wait till next week to see how many and how many of them are good.

Interesting behavior that I've noticed in my waxbills. Since mom GBW went missing right after the babies fledged, their dad has ignored them, but the RBFF has taken over fatherly weaning duties. It's strange to me that another species would take over fathering these little guys. I'm just glad that he has, because otherwise those babies never would have made it. As it is, I've already lost two of them so there are only three left.

KarenB & isobea & Atbird

Hurray for good Fathers.

The begging dance, is truly adorable Anna. When you observe it from the front, all you see is this little baby chicken body, with these tiny wings fluttering, and the big feet going. That's what I've been trying to get a picture of, but so far no success. By the way, Luciano, is the only one feeding these two.

I'm glad Daryl, took over the feeding duties with his babies, Iso. Thank God, for these good Daddies. What's with these lazy Mamas anyway? I just don't get it. She can be right beside her crying babies, and she just hops over them and continues to stuff her own face. I mean that's just wrong.

Now that is interesting Karen. You wouldn't think that he would show any interest really. Was he feeding his own young prior to taking these kids over? I hope you don't lose anymore babies.

Canary begging dance is too cute. Weaver doesn't do it anymore, but dad sometimes still gets in a paternal mood and goes up to him and feeds him anyway, Weaver still accepts it.

I think the weaning by the males is typical for canaries. I also saw it in my zebra finches - mom stopped feeding a few days after fledging and let dad finish up,

Dylan- The funny thing is, is that usually in the Canary kingdom, the ladies get to raise the kids, not the males so much.

We just have sweeties, who love their babies.

lovezebs, Yes, my fire pair had the babies they were feeding, come to think of it, but I found them tossed, with food in their crops, one after the other. I wondered if one of the other waxbills were pulling them out because that pair seemed so attentive. Then I found my fire hen dead after the macaw incident. Maybe he is making up for losing his whole family.

KarenB - That's so sad for the poor firefinch, losing his entire family.

@lovezebs - What a cutie pie in those photos!

Luciano is so incredibly lovely. I'm happy to hear he's a good daddy too!
How many canary babies do you have? Just Pokey and Tiny Tim?

I swear I saw one zebra fledgling feeding another fledgling yesterday. I don't know if that's actually what happened, but he stuck his beak in a begging sibling's open beak.

I love babies. They're so darn cute. <3

Goodmorning Mia.

Yes, there are only two little crested Canary sweeties. Originally, there were tgree hatchlings, but one must have died early on.

So it's just Tiny Tim and Pokey.
