How long is cuttlebone good for?

I've often wondered; does cuttlebone get "old" or "stale". I've only replaced it when they've chewed it very thin.

So long as it doesn't get wet causing it to go mouldy it's good for a long time

I replace cuttlebone when they look dirty/mouldy and the birds won't touch them anymore (around 2 months). But usually they consume them before it gets to that color especially if they are breeding. What I do is use small cuttlebone (less than 10 inches in length) for breeding cages and large ones for flight cages.

Agreed with the others.

I place it in a spot where it won't get splashed or soiled.

I've found they don't seem to eat it once it gets really thin - there's not as much to bite into.
So when it gets thin, I remove it and put in a new one.

I use the remaining thin cuttle bone pieces and I'll just take a knife and scrape it over their egg food. So it doesn't go to waste.

I've never really thought about it, mine usually gets gone pretty quick.
