PetCo Finch Cage

Post by carcoozie » Sun Nov 30, 2014 9:26 pm

Does anyone have this Petco 30x14 finch cage? I am wondering if the side panels could be removed to attached two to make a 60" flight? Thanks!

I have one of these. If you unbend the loops that keep the end panel attached to the other sides it should be doable :)

Yes, it is totally doable. All you have to do is zip tie the edges together once you remove the end panels.

If you want to get several to hook together, you can get them in lots of four: http://www.countryfeathers.net/breeder-cages.html

I have one of these and that is a GREAT price for it!! Snatch it up, whether you do just the one or put two together.

I have six Petco finch cages and they work great for pairs and juveniles! I love that the nest box fits the side door and I can put perches, swings, greenery etc. with plenty of room for flying. They cost about $30 here. If you have a needle nose plier, you can open the looped connections on the sides and connect the cages, which would create a very nice flying width.

So at some point recently (in the last 2 or 3 months) PetCo has stopped carrying this particular cage.

You can still see the cage and its reviews at this link. The last review is from April of this year (2015) so I assume it was still available in the stores at that time.

However this Prevue Flight cage looks like it is the same cage, right down to the scrolls on the doors - and the fact that, as was reported by one reviewer of the PetCo Finch cage, removing the grate in the bottom would make the cage unstable (no DUH!)

Do you think it is the same cage? Do you think the doubling-up trick would work with this cage even if its not the same as the PetCo cage?

One has to wonder why they stopped carrying the only really suitable cage they had for finches ... PetSmart doesn't have even one. The best you can manage is a cage really intended for a cockatiel.

I removed the grates on mine and they are not unstable.

Countryfeathers.net carries a 30x18x18 cage that has a removable grate. Unfortunately, you have to buy in case lots, which is not practical nor economical for many. These 30x18x18 cages are made in China, are are available at many places online. If they are in a pet shop, they will be quite a bit more expensive, I would think.

Thanks, I had seen that cage at countryfeathers. If I were ever going to breed or otherwise have a lot more birds, I think that would be a doable useful alternative.

But since I just have the two, and as it would most likely be best to keep it at just one cage-worth of birds, I've decided on the Prevue F075 instead on Amazon for under $100. 37.5" x 18" x 20.5", will fit neatly on top of my dresser. (You can get a version on a rolling stand for about $50 more, and they stack!)

It's MUCH sturdier, a bit larger, and, if I ever were to lose my mind and decide I needed entire flocks of birds, much easier to hook together end-to-end, safer and more stable to stack, and more likely to remain stable with 4' flourescent lights nestled on top.

Also easier to clean with sturdier "drip pans".

I'm REALLY glad I ran across that one. I'd seen it before, but had not realized the divider was removable. I just wish it came in white ...

I sent an email to Countryfeathers to ask if their cages would remain stable if the grate was removed permanently, and they replied that they do not recommend removing the grate permanently. So apparently, it is only removable for cleaning purposes and must be returned to the cage right away.

I wondered about that. That cage is OK, but not the sturdiest, from what I have been told and what I can observe.

Still, had PetSmart had one like it when I got my birds, I'd have bought it instead of the cockatiel cage I ended up with. And stuck with it.

So I was in PetCo today, and much to my surprise, there on the shelf was the 18x18x30 PetCo Finch cage. Which is NOT on their website and hasn't been for awhile.

So I asked one of the employees about it.

Apparently THAT particular cage is going to be coming from a different importer now. Same cage, different packaging. But the new ones are not in yet.

So if she is correct, the PetCo Finch Cage may be making a comeback, and there may be a few of the old ones left on the shelves.

Just FYI.
