Mr Mechanical on road to recovery

First let me say I love my two birds, I have grown very fond of them and my male is a super bird he is a great little boy, love him to bits. They both get to sleep in warm conditions and given the best foods.

Two weeks ago, I noticed he was quiet, no more KACHING KACHING or beep beep, he then started breathing heavily and rocked on the perch, he was very bad, I gave them more biotics and supplements and it never helped.

Then three days ago it was very bad and when I saw him I was so sad, could do nothing. He would not even move at all.

I went to the vet twice, and got a really nice doctor in SA who looks after birds etc, he told me what to get and I went back to the vet, I got IVOMEC and had to hold the bird and rub between his shoulders, after two days, today is a good day, my little bird is starting to beep beep and make noises, is stronger and flying, he eats a lot also, and has started to KACHING but it is broken sounds, so soon I think another 3 days he will be normal again.

He has now stopped 80% of that breathing, he has about 20% to still go, but he seems like he will recover 100%.

I told him if he dies I will go and fetch him, so he has no choice but to recover. I love my birds.

And today we had a new chick hatch, so all seems to be good........

I could never forget your little guy, as his name is so apt! They do look like little mechanical wind-up toys when they're doing their little dance!

So it sounds like perhaps he had air sac mites?

Am I correct to assume that Ivomec is an ivermectin medication? An antiparasitic drug?

If so, I would be sure to treat his mate too.

If she's not symptomatic, I would hold off and wait to treat until the babies are grown (just in case she feels under the weather during treatment. Sometimes, they feel poorly before they feel better, especially with ASM because the body needs a couple days to flush out the dead mites).

ASM (and any other type of parasite, for that matter) tends to infect everyone. So I would treat the entire lot once the babies are grown up.

Congrats on your little ones! I just got 2 surprise zebra babies from my favorite male Squeepers - one whom I never thought I'd get a baby from as he tends to prefer the boys!

Keep us posted on Mr. Mechanical! And I'd love to see a photo too once he's feeling better!

That is actually an injection that is given to cows etc to kill bugs and ticks, he warned me to only rub in a drop, and the bird gets sleepy, but after two days of treatment Mr Mechanical is about 80% ok, today this past hour is a MASSIVE difference, thanks, all. Gary
