OC babies all grown up :)

Post by Rox » Sat Aug 08, 2015 12:52 am

My 9 Orange-cheek babies are now between 6 and 8 months old and couldn't get more gorgeous if they tried! :D

I had 3 clutches earlier this year, from 2 different pairs and I'm hoping to get 2 unrelated pairs from these youngsters. I am incredibly curious to see if these F1 pairs go to nest quicker or easier than their wild caught parents.

Baby photo's :D

Rox

Oh my God, Roxanne....... they are gorgeous!
Are their cheeks yellow as babies, then turn orange when they mature? I've only ever seen them as adults.

Such cuties !!!! I love orange cheeks. I have a pair that are obviously bonded, but no interest in nesting yet. Is there a secret to getting them started?

Best of luck with them!!!

Your birds are beautiful. Looking at pics is a dangerous thing to do. When I see the amazing birds people have I want them too. =P~

Elana, they fledge with very pale orange cheek patches and then moult into the brighter orange. They are definitely the cutest fledgling's I have had so far :D

Jen
Jen, your aviary would be perfect for them! If you have a true pair, they should go to nest for you. Just make sure you have some nesting area's down low for them, either on the floor or below 1m. They prefer to nest on the ground. Good luck with your pair!

Leo519
Laura, I'm sure you must have space for one more cage

Thanks everyone, I am super proud of these little guys :D :D

First off, your birds are gorgeous! :)

Secondly, what camera do you have? Those pictures are so crisp!

jebediah thank you!

I have a Nikon D5100 and it does take beautiful photo's. A hint to anyone with an aviary (or even a flight cage) - paint the wire/mesh black. It makes viewing and photographing the birds so much easier :D

MariusStegmann Hopefully I will have a homebred pair of OC's for you by the end of next year. They would do great in your huge aviary :)

Jen, Rox's secret to breeding them are the following:

1) An unlimited supply to live food.
2) An aviary just for small waxbills where they don't have to compete with aggressive species for nests and territory.
3) A well planted aviary.
4) Access to natural sunlight.

Rox, done, but only if I can pay market price for them.
