Bird Seed Cakes

Post by jebediah » Mon Aug 10, 2015 12:09 pm

So I decided to make some bird seed cakes as a treat for my boys. It's similar to the cakes you see for wild birds, but with ingredients you can control. My boys avoid their pellets like the plague so this helps me sneak them in. muhahahaha!

Preheat over 370 degrees.

1 cup bird seed.
1 cup bird pellets.
1/4 cup oat groats, coconut, raisins, etc. (any little extras you want to add)
1 cup egg whites and egg shells crushed up
few drops vitamin supplement (I used one specifically for skin & plumage)

Mix all the ingredients and place into a lightly-greased silicon mold. I used an ice cube tray mold. Place mold on a cookie tray to remove easily from oven. Cook for 10-15 minutes. Let cool before removing the cakes.

Why don't you feed the egg yolk? There are many things in the yolk that would be beneficial.

I use the whole egg when making eggfood or birdie cakes because of the great nutritional value they gain from the whole eggs.

I'm going to move this thread to the Recipes for Birdfood subforum in the Diet and Nutrition forum, so it doesn't disappear in the general conversation.

I agree with the others, I'd use the whole egg.

I was mostly using the egg yolks just for their binding power. I suppose they would act the same with the yolk though, yes?

Does anybody make this with all seed and no pellets?

Would it be possible to substitute something like flaked grains (Winco has a mix of flaked rye, wheat, oats, and barley) instead of the pellets?

Turn towards home, and go there. Many overs, over woods and fields, streams and hills, many overs. Just turn towards home. How else would one go there? Perhaps it was a dream, and you have awakened from it. May the earth rise up beneath you, with home in your heart, and your person waiting.
