Argh... we have a plucker in the aviary at the moment. The bad bird (don't know which of them it is) has been attacking and plucking out poor little saddleback pied male. There are bare spots on the joints of his wings and the back of his head has been completely plucked.
So out came the poor little boy and into the cage with a female that has for some reason lost the vast majority of her flight feathers.
I would put them into the flight cage, but we have 5 fledgling males in there that are going for a trip to the pet store after xmas.
I think that I might head down and get the timber we need to build the new aviary sooner rather than later.

The best course of action is still to hook up a camera to catch the culprit. Of course get the boiling water ready at the same time.
It's sad to see poor birds being bullied like that.

I Love Finches, Especially Strawberries.
I keep my Strawberry pair in a non-flight cage due to space constraints. If I have my way, I'll go for a flight cage or keep a hundred finches in a huge aviary.

I think that our biggest problem at the moment is that we are crowded in the aviary. We have 8 youngsters that just come out of the nest and about 22 mature cocks and hens... and we might have a few too many cock birds in there hence why the saddleback pied was getting beat up on.

The aviary is 7' long by 4' wide and 6' high
It's big enough for about 22-25 birds, but zebs breed like crazy

It is incredibly frustrating, isn't it?
My guys appear to have settled down lately (knock on wood). I still have the occasional bird, with a bit of a plucked patch here and there, but nothing like before.
Little Scar, is doing very well away from her Zebbie counterparts. She is a very small hen, which I think is one of the reasons why she was beat up so badly.

I am thinking of getting a wireless outdoor CCTV web cam to put in there so that I can remotely monitor and record the goings on in the aviary...

Might be a good idea. That way you can keep an eye on any potential problems (such as bullying, plucking, and sometimes actual attacks..... and be able to pick out the trouble makers and pull them out of community flights).
