Romeo & Juliet - A Waxbill Tale

Post by Rox » Fri Apr 08, 2016 11:43 pm

Romeo was from the House of Orange-cheeks, while Juliet came from the House of Red-eared's. While their love was forbidden, nothing could keep them apart. Especially not the Guardian of the Aviary, who was clearly sleeping on the job (aka me...)

I present to you the Orange-eared/Red-cheeked/Confused Waxbills... All five of them #-o

Seriously though, I don't promote hybrids. Turns out my two 'pairs' of red-eared's were in fact one male and three hens. When I then set up a new pair of orange-cheeks, the young male paired up with the wrong hen. All red-eared's have since been sold but I'm not quite sure what I will do with this lot. They could be fertile. It has been fascinating watching them color up though. They still have a while to go yet and I can't wait to see the end results.

Ps, apologies for being so quiet on the forum, it's been a busy couple of months. Additional studies through work is keeping me occupied and we sadly had to say goodbye to my Great Dane just over two months ago. We have subsequently gotten two puppies that are keeping us on our toes (forgotten how much work they can be!). The birds are all doing great and going strong :D

Well it seems these two are so closely related that hybridization would be expected in an aviary. And well, hell, tell 'em pull up a chair and get a plate, we are all family in here! (laughs)

I'm no stick in the mud about things breeding with another species. I would find it quite hilarious if CackleJax (society) bred , wish my gouldian Brat. Cause quite frankly he takes his women by force (we all know that), and with her crappy attitude she would DESERVE it!. Wont happen, but we can all have our dreams, eh? Snort!

Plus the babies would look hysterical, and if someone cant have a dang laugh WITH their birds, then please just sell them, they are too far gone for hope.

The babies look ADORABLE, the mom and dad absolutely smitten and as usual the pictures are amazing.

And what makes you think REAL LIFE is allowed to get in the way of this forum?? (jokin jokin)

Welcome Back Rox! How many times have the puppies peed in the house? **giggle

Those are gorgeous babies!!

I have never heard of those two species hooking up together. Will be interesting to see how they color up as adults. Absolutely stunning photos of the Rox.

Since those two species are closely related plus they don't look terribly different, the hybrids may turn out quite lovely (and fertile!). You just can't stop young love! Sorry about the loss of your Great Dane, but two puppies must be keeping you busy! Double trouble!!

Who are we to stand in the way of true love???

I never knew these two species could or would breed and produce babies, and such lovely babies. I would not part this pair, and I would not sell these gorgeous babies, I would start keeping a very detailed journal, and go down in history as the creator of a new species.

By the way, if you don't post pictures of those puppies, I'm going to have to go down to SA, and scold you...... what an excuse, eh?

Babs@Chrismurdoch3@Sally@lovezebs

Thank you :D I honestly never thought I would get hybrids though. Not since I had apparent 'true pairs' and also because neither species is easy to breed. Most annoying part though, is that the parents fed mostly egg food, hardly a mealworm taken. My dream waxbill pair!! But no, no more hybrids. We need to keep the species pure. I will probably keep most of them as my 'exotics' The young OC male that I bred last year has since started to pair up with the wild hen I originally intended for him. Gotta love young hormones, not much love loss for his removed mate lol!

Babs, I have lost count of the pees in the house X_X Shame, they are not that bad at all and it's worth the initial chaos. My one cat has since decided that this is not on and has lived under the wooden shed of the aviary for the last 5 weeks... If only she was like my other cat - one good aimed smack is enough to put any new pup in it's place

Elana, just for you :D

First came Cosmo 5 weeks ago, via a local Dachshund rescue and he is now 6 months old. Bad background but a total sweetie. Loves his cuddles and his insecurity is getting better already. He may have Dachshund in him but there is loads of Jack Russel there too. He is a long dog with springs in his legs!

It soon became clear that Cosmo has way more energy than our 7 year old Daxie, so we decided to get another pup. Enter Rollo, a pure bred but beautiful accident - Basset x Labrador, now 11 weeks old and such a happy and independent pup.

It's like walking through a land mine zone in the house to avoid all the chew toys! But I love it :D

Gorgeous puppies! Sometimes I think I'd like to get a puppy, but I know my senior dog would not be pleased. He really likes being the one and only, and he has had the house to himself for too long now to adjust to a newcomer.

Sally I was actually very worried about my older Daxie girl and how she would handle a puppy. She can be a real cow if she wants to be. But she has surprised us all and has taken on mommy/teacher role which is awesome :D

Oh, I also got 2 rabbits in December that have free run of the garden during the day. I really need to move to a farm hahahaha

Here I am with part of my zoo :D

OH MY GOD!!!
Rox, I love LOVE those two adorable boys . They are soooo cute.
A Dachrussel, and a Labasset.... I love it !!!

I am so happy for you sweetie. There's nothing like puppies to bring LIFE back into life.

The mental images of a Lab and a Bassett getting together, had me absolutely howling over here.... A Bassett with a step ladder, or a Lab ground crawling on its belly.... oh geez woman =)) =)) =))

Elana, there was definitely some crawling and crouching involved. Mom is the Basset =))

I met both parents - both well socialized and great family dogs. Mom knocked me over trying to lick me to death :D

Speaking of interesting mental images......

This brings to mind the story, of a Great Dane breeder, who had endless problems with an ambitious neighborhood Chihuahua boy , who would regularly come over, and tunnel his way into the kennels of the bitches who were in heat.....

Keep those pictures coming, of all your interesting hybrids, both furry and feathered. I wouldn't mind some of those tiny Orange cheek/Red browned babies, they look adorable.
