PICS Before and After - Baldy & Mel

Post by Animalzoo » Wed May 11, 2016 4:48 pm

Baldy/Vulture Face

Came home with me on 11th Feb.......

Image

She kept losing feathers on her chest....

Image

But, 3 months later she has a black head/face....so pretty and so much happier.

Image

Mr Melanitis came home on the same day......and as you can see (in the above and below photos) he had unnatural blue chest.

Image

3 months later, he has a white chest and becomes a strong dominant male called Mel who wont stop singing to the girlies.

Such a wonderful feeling, these birds are lovely. A few others still have pin feathers but it won't be long and they'll all be so pretty and I'll be pairing some up and hoping for babies :D

I couldnt have done it without the encouragement of lovezebs and the assistance of debbie276

I have some really pretty birds now and the help and support from the kind people on here was essential.

It seems my little village has come to learn I help rescues as I had a call today about a budgie found on the streets. I was asked if I could take it in. Poor thing is covered in face mites but I'm well stocked up with medicines and supplements now. He's sleeping safe and sound in a quarantine cage and good job he was found when he was as we had a nasty rain and thunderstorm today.

Thanks to this wonderful forum for all your help. I'm glad I found you =D> =D>

Hi Sue.x

Your remedies are probably posted in a different topic but could you please repeat the treatment process that brought your balding birds back to perfect feather?

Thanks,
Paul

Hi Paul, for some reason I can't tag you.

Yes, there was a long thread that went through everything but to summerize it really isnt too complicated.

Bear in mind the pet shop condition they came from was terrible. Each bird was housed in a dirty 6" display cage that I would only ever use for travel, never to live in. The diet in the pet shop was seed and water.

Us bird people are programmed to keep any bird in the biggest, cleanest, prettiest cage full of toys and friends. It makes sense that walking out the front door of the pet shop provided them a better lifestyle.

After that I purchased online various other medicines as recommended...

Image

Scatt for mites
Wormout Gel for worming
Coccivet for parasites
Calcivet for Vit D
Avirol for Lice (also covers mites)

It cost a small fortune but the amount you use per application is minuscule, drops per 250ml of water etc so I have tons left. I bought the smallest 50ml bottles as well. You can but 100ml or 250ml of these products but thats way too much for my use.

The good thing is they can treat all 'ornamental birds', so not chickens or birds bred for consumption. I keep finches, budgies, canaries etc so I can look after the lot with these.

I treated the birds with one treatment at a time which took about 3 weeks and then just continued to repeat Scatt for mites. I provided an extensive varied diet daily. Ironically this bought the hens into breeding condition  so I pulled back on the extra supplemental food which worked. After 2 months + they started to molt and grow their pin feathers. Mel is done, Baldy is just about there and a few of the others will be done in a week or so. I took home 5 birds from that pet store and they all needed TLC.

I hope that helps and if you need to know anything else just let me know.
