Learning about Gouldian finches
It's been 5-days since I arrived home with my 2 Male Gouldian finches. I've learned a lot in five days and I'm finding it rather enjoyable watching them. They are very different from the Parrots I used to own so many years ago.
I'm very surprised that they are so curious about me and seem to enjoy my company. They no longer fly erratically around the cage when I approach. They just sit on their perch and look at me as I speak to them. This really surprises me!
They are more vocal then I thought they would be as small birds. They love to sing away to me when they see I am near. I find them beautiful to look at, their coloring is stunning for such small birds.
Both the "Boys" are Red-heads, one has a Purple-breast, and one has a White-breast. The White-breast is a little 'chunky'.
I can always tell when they are ready for Bed .... they both sit side-by-side on a perch and remain quiet. They don't eat or drink. They are almost motionless. I think they are telling me it is time for
them to go to sleep....
I am really enjoying having birds again. I knew I couldn't handle a parrot again, and I am certainly
glad I chose to have Gouldian finches in my home.

Hi Patrick,
Thank you for your post, that was a pleasure to read, I'm glad you're very happy with your Gouldians and continuesly learning more about them,
Keeping finches is a fantastic past time for many people and me personally keeping birds is like a way of life as I've had birds most of me life from quite a young age and wouldn't change it for the world
The more you learne the more you'll like it and maybe even one day you may wanna get some more and perhaps try breeding em

Enjoy watching your birds. I love to just sit and watch my birds too.

JerseyGuy Now you are hooked!
I've had people who don't have finches ask me what they do. I reply that I just enjoy watching them be birds. For me, they are very relaxing. Glad you are enjoying your new birds so much!

JerseyGuy Glad you love the gouldians. I have always had birds since I was quite young. When I got my frst Gouldian I had ever had finches before. I love them!!! I have tried other finches, mainly Waxbills but I keep coming back to Goudians. I love their natures and the genetics keep my mind active (although with yelloes and pastels I start gettig lost ha ha).
Enjoy!
Enjoy!

Re: Learning about Gouldian finches
Everyday the Gouldian 'Boys' keep me fascinated and entertained. They are just lovely. The purple-breasted male is fascinated by me, and always flies to end of the cage closest to me and sings, he gets so excited to see me. The white-breasted male could care less about me and doesn't move an inch when I come into the room. He is the less active of the two. But he is the largest of the two also, and he could certainly use a lot more flying time ! LOL.

Re: Learning about Gouldian finches
I love my gouldians! I have 5 of them. 3 (2 females/1 male) are in the mixed finch/mannikin/canary/whydah outdoor aviary and I have a breeding pair in a cage on my porch. I got them 3 days ago and am in love! Every time I walk past the breeding pair, I say "meep meep" and today, they answered me! The male is black head, white breast, green back (I don't understand all of the gouldian lingo yet...LOL!) and the female is red (yellow?) head, lilac breast, yellow back. Awesome little birds!
