Good morning everyone, getting a late start today.

w.l. - I've been checking The Finch Farm website and also Birds Express (they haven't really brought a lot of birds in in the last two months). Just thought there might be more people I don't know about.

lovezebs - Elana, I mentioned the Damaras in my post on black-headed canaries (in species, starting on page 2). Very pretty little birds and closely related to the true Alarios (aka black-headed canaries). Would love to have a pair, but I have to be sure (as much as one can ever be) that I wouldn't loose them to the pox. They are too rare and too expensive to take that risk.

I remember the Alarios, but not these guys.
What's their song like? Is it similar to the domestic Canary?

lovezebs - Elana, I can't find any decent youtube videos with either one of the two species singing. Just searched again and the best one I found is this one (not the Damara but the bl.-h. canary):

lovezebs - I found two more videos of single Alario males singing. There seems to be quite a variety of songs.

lovezebs - Hi Elana, in my opinion those squeaky colored canaries look terrible! How would one even dye a canary? And why? There are so many beautiful color bred ones available.

lovezebs - No, wasn't the whole thing in Spanish? Now I'll have to go back to it.

lovezebs - don't know how. English and German I can do and even some French, but not Spanish (even though I've lived in southern California for 31 years now).

There is a translation option that pops up on the bottom of the screen, but never mind.

This guy goes on and on about mixing Canaries and Lovebirds to come up with these colours, and that the young are fertile, blah blah blah ...
Then on the next page, you find out that it's an April fools day joke :D

lovezebs - Alright, I clicked on that link three times now, scrolled up and down - no translation pop up. Oh well, it's not the first time I'm technologically challenged. Thanks for the explanation.
Probably should have guessed something crazy like that since my B-day is April 1...

This post has really gone off the rails, hasn't it? Fun, though.

isobea,

The Finchfarm also offers Black-faced swee waxbills, which rarely come on the market.
I think they are even prettier than the black-crowns, although not cheap, costing almost the same as those canaries.
Not tempted?
