sizes :
if your birds are coming from a breeder that goes to bird shows like most breeders here , the comment on the list will be often * to small , to skinny . so they select with there breeding cpl's on this , the left overs go to the pet shop .
the size of a bird also goes down with in-breeding , means like father bird with daughter , mom with son , brother and sister .... these things are for a serious bird breeder a def. no no . always be sure you have enough blood lines to switch .
and as last a small cage will keep the birds small ... no flying muscles that is trained , thats why when you sometimes buy a bird at a shop or breeder and release it in yout bigger cage , it tries to fly but only going down to the ground
so use your eyes when you buy and don't buy only with your hart cos you feel sorry for a bird ...

Thanks for explaining Ray. I know nothing about Gouldians but I've been into animals for a long time. Bred and raised and have a good eye. I agree that a lot of the surplus birds or left overs go to petstores and you don't know the history. My judgement said it would have been worth a shot to buy the birds and give it a chance but it just wasn't meant to be at this time.

although i know there's a few pet store owners inhere with the best intentions , i still think that a pets place isn't the place to buy birds if you seriously think about to start breeding with whatever kinda bird . better do look 4 some serious breeders , visit them and see how they have it ( cage size , food , light , and ofcourse the quality of the birds ) , even if you have to pay a little bit more its worth it .

I agree Ray. I rather buy from experienced breeders but sometimes it's hard to find, or they are too far away. I don't want to have any birds shipped. I'd prefer to pick them in person and perhaps see their set up and where they were raised. I'm always checking and looking to find local.
I bought my societies and first pair of Goulds from a nice store who specializes in birds and I'm pretty happy with them. They take good care of them and breed as well. They don't carry Gouldians too often though. Mainly European and African finches.
