Thats it... we are a country town (although they call it a city)... right in the middle of Western Australia's milk producing region. Always lots of rats around cows!

I have noticed that with the parrot finches... constantly on the move. I think that I really need a much larger aviary for them to live in.

And as for the girl... thats her actual colouring. As Babs showed in the post after yours... they look really weird and are quite rare. And damned cute... I am hoping that these two get it on and make a few more for me.

And no... I don't think that this rat we have running around is quite that cool...

Hi Mark,

So how on earth do you get these half siders when you're breeding? And when she breeds for you, how do you know what colour the kids will be? Or will they come out like mom?

If your rats are not like the rats in the picture Mark, :-O GET THE SHOVEL!!! LET THE TERRIERS LOOSE!!! :O3

Half siders don't breed true, they're chimeras; two embryos (or egg cells?) which fuse into a single bird early in development. Sometimes one half is male and one is female - probably happens more often than we know, but it's not obvious except in species with different color morphs, or which are sexually dimorphic.

Very beautiful though usually.

It happens in other animals too - cats and butterflies, among others.
