society with swollen crop area and droopy wings

Post by lem2bert » Sat Mar 04, 2017 11:15 am

Hi everyone , I purchased my first society finch about 1 month ago and everything is fine with him.
I purchased a female at the same pet store about a week ago and I am not sure if it may have a problem. It looks to me like the crop area is swollen and she does not keep her wings up close to her body. I do not know how old she is , I tried to check her band but I cannot turn it to see the first two numbers. I think she is very young. I am going to include pictures but they may not be usefull.
Any ideas ?? She eats seed , millet, and I added apple sauce to her eggs and fresh vegetables.

That's odd.

Is she like that all the time?
Was she like that when you bought her?

I noticed that the next day.

And yes when she is not eating or drinking she sits on a perch , until she is ready to eat and drink again.

I had her in my hand yesterday to check her band and did not notice any hardness.

She just does not seem as active an my other finch.

An Avian Vet, would be your best bet.
However, if thst's not an option, then it's not an option.

Is she pooping normally and regularly?
That's important, because it will tell you if food is going through. Have you noticed diarrhea or vomiting?

She might have sour crop, or some sort of an infection, or a blockage somewhere in the intestinal tract.

You mentioned putting acv on the food.
I would add it to the water.
Putting it on the food, might just sour the food.

If she's no better, try and get a hold of Laraine....

Good luck.

Thank-you so much for your advice. It seems like her poop is ok right now, but I will keep watching it. I put applesauce on her eggs and vegetables. I will try the acv in her water.
I will keep a close eye on her. Thank-you so much. (no vet in my area for birds) :( .

Was she in a small cage prior to going into your larger cage. Possibly her wings are a little sore from being able to fly for the first time?

I'm just speculating.

Babs

Thank-you so much for your comment, that would have never occurred to me. She was in one of those glass closed in cages with 3 others and a nest, so they were always cramming in that nest to get away from people gawking at them. (who could blame them.). She flies ok, actually very good at flying from one perch to the other without over flying it and landing on the side of the cage. Right now she is in quarantine in a cage 25" W x 22" H and 13 " D. I am going to try the apple cider vinegar in her water , just have to find the post where it was suggested to someone to know how much acv to water.

Babs

I found the post, it actually was your advice to someone who had a similar problem with the crop. 1 drop acv per 5 oz of water for 2-5 days. Will try that when I do water changes tmr.

Thats the dose I give if anyone shows any signs of slow crop or just slight general unwellness, because its so gentle. Its a very light dose. I hope it helps.

My little society lost her battle last night. I only had her a short time but she had a place in my heart already. She was such a little fighter. I am going to go to the pet store and talk to them about a few things that bother me. Some of them are so arrogant and not helpful at all, and some of them are so kind. I do think that they should know about this little bird. Babs and Lovezebs thank you for your help and kindness.

Barbara

Thank-you Barbara, She was eating and drinking and pooping up to lights out. I put a light on her cage to keep her warm, but shut it off before I went to bed because by that time she was unable to get away from it. I put a couple of battery operated Christmas candles next to her cage so she could have a little light.

I went to the pet store and explained what happened to the manager and she gave me a refund and told me they were getting another shipment in on March 9 and would be on the floor 5 days later. The girl was very nice to me.

I do not know if I will get another one from there or call another store and see if they have any.

So sorry you lost your finch, but the pet store is willing to work with you, so that is a good thing.

lem2bert I don't think the pet store is at fault here I think the little girl must of had something wrong with her to not be able to digest her food, something internal that the breeder, store or especially you could do anything for.sometimes we just can't figure out what went wrong I have bought four birds from them and have had good luck and your other one is healthy.see what they have if go from there.hang in there :D
