Gold breasted finch
Hi everyone,
I have a baby gold breasted finch that fledged a couple if days ago but his feathers are patchy and horrible looking. Will his feathers grow in as he grows up or is there something else going on here? I have an open aviary with multiple types of finches however no one seems to be picking on him and his parents are still feeding him.
Thanks in advance for the advice!

Walley
Do you know if he was old enough to fledge?
He looks awfully young to me....
Here's a picture of a Goldbreast fledgling from another Forum member. You can see the difference right away.
Personally, I would try to put him back in the nest.

I thought that as well...but I put him back in the nest for the last 2 days and he refuses to stay put. He is extremely tiny!

Are there others in the nest with him?
I just had a tiny Gouldian, who kept 'fledging' early. I finally figured that it was the bigger sibs kicking him out. I put him right to the back of the nest, with the bigger ones to the front, and he was actually the last of the five to fledge.

Re: Gold breasted finch
Walley - The first time my gold breasts had babies, they couldn't get enough live food (I offered mini mealworms and some subterranean termites that I found one day). So their three babies fledged very early as well and looked pretty much like your little guy. They were so small that they could fit through my 1x1 cm aviary wire, so I covered the aviary in mosquito screen until they got bigger. The parents did continue feeding them and they turned out fine.
As long as the nights aren't cold, he should be fine.
Good luck, Iso

He is the only baby. There were only 2 eggs and one didn't hatch.
I was putting him back in the nest for the first 2 days but they built their nest right at the top of the aviary, which is about 9 feet up. If he continues to fall from that height multiple times a day would that not cause potential injury?

They don't really fall, they flutter down, so no worries there. However I'm sure its a pain in the neck crawling up there everyday to put him back.
I guess if he keeps jumping out, he feels that he must be ready.
I guess if it's warm enough (like Iso says) and if the parents are feeding, then he should be ok.
Good luck

Re: Gold breasted finch
He definitely looks a bit unfinished, he may have left the nest a little early. As long as the parents are feeding him and no other birds are picking on him, I'd leave him be, he'll fill out as he grows.
