Feather loss directly under beak.

Post by Zebra_Finches2 » Sun Aug 06, 2017 12:30 pm

So we have had this one zebra Finch (female for three years) a week ago we bought a male, I don't know if this has been like this for a while but I just realized some missing feathers directly under her beak, the male and female appear to get along, they sleep together and to mating calls. This is further confusing me on what's happening. I don't believe its plucking because I once had a bird that plucked. Any advice would help, thanks

The feather loss is only in a tiny square directly under her beak

This sometimes occurs during a moult. My society finches often lose feathers around the bill and eye when they start to moult; zebra finches are likely similar.

Hello, and welcome to the Forum.

If this naked patch just started after you brought in the male, it is possible that he is plucking her a bit while preening her.

I would keep an eye on it.

If she is moulting, then you should be seeing feathers around the cage and on the floor.

If they have a nest, he might be starting to pull feathers off of her to line the nest.

Okay thank you!
(We used to have society finches with the female before they died. They are quite similar)

Yeah just a day after the post he started to move paper to the food dish to make a nest.
