Such A Cool Idea
Hi All,
Happened to come across this picture of sprouting grass or seeds at the bottom of your cage under the grate.
I think it's really cool, but not at all sure how you would clean it...
Any thoughts?

Mmm....yea know what yer saying Elana but in this case I really don't think that the owner of the birds in that particular pic is actually trying to deliberately sprout the seedlovezebs wrote: Hi All,

My belief is that he / she is just to damm lazy to wanna clean the cage out

That is most probably bath or drinker water that has been spilled onto the floor of the cage eaither by the birds or the owners carelessness

I don't think so Stuart, lol, seeing as the caption beneath says:
"Great idea for anyone who uses cage grates! From the group "Gouldian's Australia.

I have tried it once but something went mouldy and it spread really quickly across the dirt so I had to toss the whole thing

Yea, that crossed my mind as well, with all the bird pee and poop, you'd think it would grow bacteria after a very short period of time. That's why I'd wondered, how on earth you'd clean things in there without throwing it all out...unless you start it up fresh every week (?)

Looks like they have the cage set on a tray of grass, with the cage tray removed. I've taken birds outside in their cages on the lawn and done the same thing.

You might be right Dylan, but I'd thought that the grass was being grown in the tray itself. I wish they had some more information about it, but if there is more info, I couldn't access it.
Any more bald vulture finches around your area?

Yea but that caption could of been put up by anyone Elana, not necessarily the owner of the birdslovezebs wrote: Stuart whiting

A lot of people also don't worry about copyright these days, the only time it becomes serious is when pics are being used for different businesses etc,
Look at how many people screen shot pics and place em up on the screen as you've also just done with this pic

I still think it's an uncleaned cage

Re: Such A Cool Idea
You grow the grass in a shallow pan that fits into the tray under the grate.
Instead of soil, which will easily support fungus and molds, just do it like sprouting seeds, and let them keep growing. (like my neighbor does for growing wheatgrass for her dogs and chickens, thick layer of seeds, rinsing frequently, keep moist, grow a thick pan of grass.)
When they get too chewed up, remove pan and put in a new one.
If you let it grow from the start underneath the grate, it would be full of poop before the plants were that high, and the birds chewing on the emerging shoots would never let them get that high or thick or healthy.
Grow them first, then slip the pan under the grate when the plants are tall enough to start poking up through the grate, but not so tall that they get smushed down when putting it in place.

Re: Such A Cool Idea
Hi maybe he/she has two trays for the cage. If so could sprout the seed outside the cage, when it grown change trays and start all lover again with the other tray. Seeds sprout really fast in the hot weather. I have two trays for all of my cages when breeding budgies and when it comes to cleaning them I just pull the dirty one out and replace it with a clean one and then I can clean the dirty trays at my leisure. Regards Mick.
10 Fyfe Canaries (bred a couple) ,2 pair of mosaic canaries, about 20 or so red factor canaries, 8 button quail, 1 fox terrier dogs (Roxi my girl dog died), no mice or rats but holes in the lawn.

Hi Gracie and Mick,
I think both of you pretty much have the same idea. I do like the idea of having two trays for each flight cage, I'd never thought about it before
.
It does make sense to sprout seeds in one tray and use it, while another tray is growing.
