Greenfinches ?
After I have got rid of all the chicks and have enough money I may buy a pair of green finches however if they aren’t good parents I won’t get them.
Are they good breeders and parents
Also I’ve seen things about canarys hybrid breeding with them and I’m getting canarys in few months time when they in colour and finished molt (red ones )will these cross breed

Re: Greenfinches ?
British greenies are the best British finch to keep as regards to breeding, they are the easiest of all to breed with and normally are very good parents,
In fact Fraza we used to use greenies as foster parents for when breeding mules and hybrids,
Yes you can breed mules and hybrids from greenies as these will breed with many different variety of canaries, you can use the cock greenie paired to a hen canary but the majority of us in England would most definitely use a cock canary paired to the hen greenies as we've often found that the fertility rate is much better if greenie hens are used as aposed to using cocks
Over the years many hybrids have been bred with greenies IE Goldie, linnet, Siskin and redpolls to name a few and have all been crossed with greenies,
However me personal favourite would have to be a large yellow Norwich canary cock paired to a large yellow feathered greenie hen,
This is what we call double factor pairing because both of the parents are yellow feathered birds, this type of pairing will ultimately produce good quality yellow feathered greenie mules, one of me favourites of all the British mules that can be produced

Re: Greenfinches ?
Within 30 odd years of breeding the greenie without no exaggeration I must of bred in the region of 500-600 birds aswell as about 40 greenie x Norwich mules, the mules that I bred were specifically for exhibition purposes,Fraza wrote: Stuart whiting thanks you have just made my choice hundred percent YES
I've always had the odd few foreign finches, waxbills and softbills over the years but nowadays I don't keep no more British and mules anymore as after 37 years I've decided to have a change and specialise in dimorphic waxbills

Re: Greenfinches ?
Fraza
Greenies are normally quiet ok with other birds but when breeding em I'd put 1 pair per cage or flight / avairy unless the avairy is quite large,
With your flight I'd put just the 1 pair in there,
the cock birds can be a little boystress towards other cocks and even at times towards the hens but there is nothing really serious about this as it's just part of their breeding territories and courtship display,
Put it this way Fraz there nowhere near as bad as zebras when it comes to being spiteful,
if anything greenies, redpolls and linnets are more of yer placid British finches compared to some of the other finches.
If yer gonna get a pair of greenies just make sure that they are properly rung IE with BBC or IOA rings on em,
If yer see any birds that have just plain rings on I'd strongly advise in not to buy em because there probably not legitimate, just stick to the brown coloured BBC or IOA rings
Be lucky

Re: Greenfinches ?
Yer can use coloured rings by all mean as for ID purposes if for example you had quite a few greenies that all looked the same,Fraza wrote: Stuart whiting okay do u think I should use those bands for my finches because I use normal coloured ones
The ring size that you'd need for greenies would be a size E,
Under no circumstances try to use yer zebra finch plastic rings on greenies because these are to small being size D, as mentioned you need size E for greenies.
However for legal requirements the birds must still have a BBC ( British bird council ) or IOA ( international orthinological association ) ring on em, doesn't mater what leg the ring is on but as long as the bird is legitimately rung,
If yer wanted to use one of yer plastic rings to use as ID then it'd simply go onto the other leg
