Picked up s'more societies
I sold some of my pied society finches and then found an ad for some more societies closer to what I want, so I essentially traded up.
Two of my existing finches are a self chocolate, and pure white that my daughter called "Marshmallow". I told her the other one was a chocolate variety and she instantly said "now we need graham crackers and we'll have a s'more" (for those of you unfamiliar with s'mores: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S%27more )
Well, four of the ones I picked up are a pure white, a self chocolate, and two self fawns (none are 100% self, but close enough) a full s'more . Also, one of the fawns is more grey (the lighter one in the pictures), so I'm not sure if one of them is something different.

They are all beautiful! If you want stronger, uniformed patterns, scalings and color, I would stick to keeping them with their own basic colors for breeding, instead of mixing mutations.
Or you'll end up with pied again, which is pretty much all we can get in the United States , unless you get lucky and find a good breeder.
I love how many societies I see in the Canada and England that are so rich in color.
Im working on a good fawn mutation here. Wish me luck.

Thanks Babs
That's my plan, to keep them as close to pure as possible. Still need to figure out the sexes though. I saw the chocolate singing today, so unfortunately all of my chocolates are male.

Thanks Fraza
That one is the reason I got them. You can't see in the pictures but it has scales on the chest too. Very pretty.
Whites are really popular here, so I'm hoping this white one is a male so I can pair it with my white female.

Congratulations Rob!
It looks like you have some pretty birds there.
Where did you get the Whites from? I am on the look out for a White female at this time.
Also I'll take a look at my Chocolate kids, and try to figure out if there are any girls in there, I'll let you know when I figure it out.
Good luck with the new kids.

The most recent one was an ad on kijiji. He had eight for sale, and I only wanted a few of them, but he didn't want to sell them individually so I bought all of them for a really good price. And then there was another ad by someone looking for free finches (he has an amazing self built cage he's trying to fill), so I gave him a few, because I would be overstocked otherwise, and then as a thanks he gave me a female canary.
The guy I got the first white from told me that her babies' babies have a chance of coming out white. So we'll see. If/when I get a white baby I'll let you know.

Very pretty birds, but consider them all Pieds. They each have some white spots, which means they carry pied, and will have pied babies. The DEW (dark eyed white) is always considered a pied.

The Dark Eyed whites are wonderful for breeding quality Pied birds with good markings. Cross them with nicely marked pieds. They are hard to find. The guy I got the first white from told me that her babies' babies have a chance of coming out white. So we'll see. If/when I get a white baby I'll let you know.
