New To Finches
I’m new to finch ownership. I’ve done as much research as I can to answer my own questions but not able to 100%.
Two questions:
First, is the white one, Sully, still a type of Zebra finch or is it another type?
Second, I’m hoping that the white one is a female. I know you tell by beak colour and I’m 95% sure it’s female orange and not male reddish-orange. Any thoughts?
I’ve had tons of types of pets in my life but these are my first tiny birds. They are an absolute joy. I’ve been letting them fre-fly since day 5 and they are perfect. They fly around a bit then go in to eat and continue that cycle. Just love them.
Thanks, Glo

Welcome to the forum! The white one is a zebra finch, and appears to be female, as a male would probably have cheek patches. haroun may be able to help you more.

You have a Male and female from the looks of it and I’m so happy u free flight some people are scared off this but I’ve always done it with my birds aswell, aren’t they great !! Haha
And are u going to breed them or have them for the attraction
When breeding it’s better to change the diet abit

Re: New To Finches
Not specifically looking to breed them but I have a hanging basket and give them nesting materials so they can do as they please. I’m not one to breed my pets but will support them with diet and materials if they do.
Free flying them has been an absolute pleasure. We don’t have other pets so they are safe. I make sure there’s no hazards and when I go out I make sure they’re closed in cage. They are sooooo easy. I’ve had the cage open for an hour now. They sat in the entrance then went back in to eat. They fly as they please and go back it. It’s really lovely.

GilbertandSully yea it’s great init and Yh they are definitely going to breed if they are happy like that and they have a basket.
If u see them doing courtship dance etc then make sure she has source of calcium like oyster grit and cuttle bone ... then give plenty of lettuce green veg and egg mix close to eggs hatching
Hope all goes well
How long have u had them

I’ve actually only had them for 12 days. Thanks for the food advice. I’m happy to give them other goodies as needed.

If you are allowing them to breed, please make sure you can find homes for the offspring. I don't know what your location is, but in the US, it can be difficult to rehome zebra finches, as they are both inexpensive and prolific.

Okay. Thanks both of you. I’ll stay on top of this. I live in Vancouver, Canada so finding homes would be no problem.

Re: New To Finches
Thanks so much. I’m keen to learn anything about these special little guys. They are just perfect. They love to come out for a fly but are so good to constantly go back in. And in the evening they go into the nest to sleep. Pretty amazing.
