Senior, retired breeders untamed

Post by Moon » Fri Nov 08, 2019 10:25 pm

A few years ago I joined this forum for the sake of my finch. My flock has either passed away or ended up rehomed with people who knew more about them. Since then I've adopted retired breeder birds of the peach face lovebird variety. I've had multiple ups and downs with these birds and considered maybe asking some questions here about what I can do to improve these birds lives.

They are not hand tame, nor will they ever be at ease with a human in the room with them. I've provided large cages for the four as well as the best food diets I was able to research. However, Finch people tend to have a different outlook on birds then parrot people. I need a little help on providing engaging games for these four birds.

I won't attempt training. Especially step up as every time I've tried my birds bolt and head for walls, windows, and mirrors.... covered or otherwise. I have conferred with specialists of the breed from an avian trainer to a breeder from Canada. I'm happy to let them have their space, I'm just looking for any extras I can give them.

Many years ago I kept and raised Lovebirds (for close to 20 years).

Personally I found them to be highly aggressive, especially the females. They are also intelligent, curious and inquisitive creatures and need to be kept busy.

I would offer swings and some toys, changing things around to keep it interesting.

Hi again lovezebs.

Yeah, I have toys. It's actually my females who are the calmer of the pairs. My males are... mmm, flighty? i've been giving them puzzles and foraging toys.
