Sexing Pied Javas?

Hi,

yesterday I bought a really nice looking pair of Normal Pied Java Sparrows at an exotics auction(they had several pairs, both in fawn and normal pieds) for $30(a steal of a deal compared to the $96 that I pay per bird at the store..).
The box says that it is a Pair, but I am no expert at sexing Javas.
What do you guys think???
This one I think is definetly a male.

This one I am not sure about

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

hi
looks like you are correct in you assumption the top one is a male because of the top mandible being larger in the male (the only way these can be visually sexed ) and the red eye ring being a lot thicker in the male ..more so when they are in breeding condition

I have no idea, but if your guys have chance to go to Hawaii, we get tons of these javas in the wild, in fact they come close to my cages for seed and bother my Gouldians all the time.

you are so lucky those pairs are not cheap at all in the uk and the fawn mutations are nearly double the price of the normal colours

Are you allowed to trap and export non native finches in Hawaii? I have red that Hawaii has strict import and export laws for birds.

Of course we are not allowed to trap the birds, but we can ship our caged birds to any parts of the US with a health certificate.

In contrast, to bring birds into Hawaii is a hassle

They ask for all kinds of permits and vet check and quarantine before he birds can get on board. And we are not allowed to have Owl finch in Hawaii too.

When can I expect my male Java to sing?? He didn't sing while his hen was there, so is there any chance he will still sing one day.
I heard they got a nice song. Only noise I get out of him so far is the regular cheep cheep...

I don't think I've ever heard the song of a java before. I've never seen one in person.

go to this link which shows you how to sex javas but it also has the song of the male java and how he looks when he is singing his dance is typical of the mannakin species very much like the society finch

I've never had mannikins or societies so I don't know what kinda dance they do.
Getting the sound discribed isn't much help. Only noise both of my Javas had made so far was the cluck that they do everytime they jump from one perch to the next.

I've looked at that website many times, Pelvis bone sexing doesn't work with either my javas nor my weavers. My male Weavers pelvic bones are so whide a quail egg fits in there.

Anywho, I am pretty sure that bird in the Top picture in my first post is a male because his beak is a lot bulkier then the other ones.
He is the one I got left now since the one in the bottom pic got eggbound and died.
