Splitting a HQ Cage into two cages?

Post by FeatherHarp » Sat Jul 18, 2009 1:49 pm

Has anybody here separated their single unit HQ cage into an upper and lower section for birds? I was wondering how that would work. Or would that not be enough room for a pair in each section?

That might be a way I could have my 'future' Societies foster some Owl eggs. So I was just wondering if anybody here has done that.

I'm looking at my single HQ flights and trying to figure out how you would do that. With two doors, one top and one bottom, you would have access to both cages, but wouldn't have a pull-out tray for the top cage. You'd have to secure a flat board or piece of metal (aluminum) to serve as the divider between the two cages, and then just lay down some paper as a liner. With the cage itself being about 36" tall, not counting the area below the bottom tray, it would leave you with two cages with actual space about 32lx21dx17-18h, so you would still have two nice-sized cages.

Thanks for your reply Sally.

I was thinking along those lines as well. It would be a good temporary situation if I wanted to have Societies foster some Owls eggs in the near future since I don't have room for another cage right now.

I will put the question to my Engineer Hubby...hopefully he can come up with a good solution for making a middle divider. :D

Now one more question....would it be better to put the Owls up in the higher section and the Societies in the lower...or vise versa?

You may want to PM James. He and I had some discussions in Atlanta in regards to how he was planning to do lots of modifications to his HQ flight. He has a single and a double or something along those lines.

He had ideas on how to combine a single and double to make a triple, how to separate a double into 2 singles and .. well, it doesnt seem too much of a stretch to go to a horizontal split.

Cant hurt to pm him and ask for ideas.
Goulds, Owls, Gold Breasts, Stars, Zebras, Societies
An obscene number of chicks and eggs
And an incredibly rare St. Goldena Breast finch
Anyone want some finches???

I don't think it would make a huge difference either way. If the Owls are in the bottom, it would give them a little more privacy, since there would be the divider above them. With Societies, you can put them anywhere.
