I wish I had written down the prices of birds at the recent Atlanta bird fair, my senior memory doesn't retain anything anymore! But, I was shocked at the difference between Atlanta and Ft. Worth--the prices in Atlanta for many finch species were about half what we pay here in Ft. Worth. Example:

Stars - Atl $25, FW $50
BCCB - Atl $25, FW $50
Lavenders - Atl $25-30, FW $60+ (if you can find them)
3 Purple Grenadiers, 1 Goldbreast + 1 cat.

Good one, Bill!

I should drive a van over there and fill it up with finches, then sell them for double in Ft. Worth--geez, I could just about cover my gas and hotel bill--guess not a good idea!

I've seen a fair share of prices and I think I can give some input here as to the maximum I would ever pay for a bird (not to say they will often go for more.) The prices listed are for single birds, not for pairs.

Gouldian - $60 Normal, $90 Yellow, $120 Blue
Owl - $60-$80 depending on if it is proven male or female
Orange Cheeked Waxbill - $30
Star - $50
Zebra - $10
Society - $10
Red Factor Canary - $75
Yellow Canary Male - $50
Red Throated Parrot Finch - $150
Purple Grenadier - $150
Strawberry - $100
Goldbreast Waxbill - $75 pair
Blue Capped Cordon Bleu - $45
Red Cheeked Cordon Bleu - $45

I'll put more when I'm up to it!

Crested Societies: $29.99 ea.
Orange-cheeked waxbills: $24.99 ea. ($45/pair)
Cordon bleus: $85 ea. ($150/pair)
Orange weavers: $75/pair ($60 male, $15 female)
Euro. goldfinch: $85 ea. ($150/pair)

As everyone can see, pet stores prices are considerably higher than bird mart prices. Pet stores have huge overheads--marts are pretty cheap for sellers. A mart table can run from $30-75, plus maybe $10 if you want electricity to have some lights on your birds. Sell one bird of the more exotics, and your mart overhead is covered.

The trend of prices dropping so much on finches can mean that these species are becoming much more common thru breeding efforts, or it can mean they are so readily available because of no restrictions on imports from Africa. Once the imports stop (and they will), availability will depend strictly on breeding programs, and prices will gradually climb again, reaching unattainable status on some (like the Pekin Robins that are now selling for $1,000 each!).
