Thanks Debbie; I will print this stuff out & study it.
The fledgling that I thought was BH/WB/Normal ..... I'm pretty sure it will have a black head. I know what you mean about the black line, but his one black dot (feather coming in) is above his eye, so that's not where the black line would be.
On the young male I bought; YH/PB/Yellow Back (actually the breast is lavender now, but will it get darker? He has white feathers around his yellow/orange head & chin & no black line. I can see a little green/blue color coming in on the top of his head as the border for his head color. Can they have no "black line" in place?

If he is colored out into adult colors I wouldn't expect the colors to change later. Are you sure it's a male? Could it be a Lilac Breast male? A picture might help.
A yellow body bird has lost the ability to produce the black color so you will not see black where it normally is on Normal body goulds. If it has a white chin it's a DFYb if the chin is more a gray color he's a SFYb.

Here's a link to the genetic section in the finch Information Center that will explain what happens in each mutation, it also has pictures for you to visually see the look of the bird. There are always variations of tints but for the most part the pictures are accurate.

Debbie, I can't thank you enough for your great explanations & patience in defining these to a person just learning. I actually sat down now to go to that site you recommended & hopefully I can get answers there so I won't have to bother you too much. You are the greatest. =D> =D>

That was interesting to hear you say the yellows have lost their ability to have black, so I won't expect black lines on him/her. I was calling him a Purple Breast because I didn't know if he'd darken up; evidently not. So now I'll call him a Lavender Breast. I just took a pic & will send it in a couple of minutes.

Here's my YH Lavender Breast Yellow Back
I was told he was a male.
You called him a DFYb. He doesn't like getting his pic taken.

My eyes are not what they used to be and pictures online are not always the most accurate but that looks more like a hen then a male to me. Have you heard him sing yet? Either way it's a beautiful bird.
Curious what others think :)

Debbie, I certainly can relate with the "eye" thing. I will try to take another picture tomorrow afternoon when the sun is shining. No, I haven't heard him/her sing. It sure could be a hen. I was told it was a male 'cause it sang, but it hasn't sung for me ever since I've had him (a couple months).
I went to the Lady Gouldian site you recommeded. I will be learning & digesting & researching all that till the cows come home! such good stuff!!!!!!!! (sure would be easier to just ask you when I have a question though  )
