Hard boiled eggs are one of the best foods for young in the nest, best part is you could add literally anything you desire with it to make it even healthier. Packet egg biscuit to me is good for emergency as it doesn't spoil so I always have some on hand. Basic egg biscuit mix is 1 egg mashed with 2 dry sugary biscuits, this is what I started off with giving my canaries when young were hatching and it worked great but now with having many finches I've upped what goes into it. Personally you can't beat the real deal of having fresh egg.

One thing to keep in mind when weaning young....they are more inclined to like more/different foods than their mom and dad.

So keep adding the LeFebers to the hardboiled egg and mix in other fruits and veggies? I have a food processor I use. Also, how long does the hardboiled egg stay fresh for in the fridge?

My eggfood, which is fairly dry, will keep 2, maybe 3 days in the fridge. Any longer, and it should be frozen. I normally make up a large batch of eggfood at a time (6 dozen eggs), divide it into containers that hold about a 2-day supply each, and freeze them. At night, I place one container in the fridge to thaw. In the morning, it sometimes needs a bit in the microwave to finish the thawing process. My birds eat this just as well as freshly-made eggfood.

I'm learning so much from this forum! What great ideas, thank you!

Are you guys putting the eggs into the food processor with the shells still on? I'm a little confused about that..

Linda (MexicanCanary), I give mine parsley too, and I *just* saw it on the "toxic plants list" in the FIC! I'm assuming there isn't also a house plant called "parsley".. yikes!

I remove the shells from mine, and then microwave the shells for 1 minute (I've read this is necessary to kill any lingering bacteria), then crush or put them in the food processor and sprinkle them on top of the egg itself. Sometimes I just chop the eggs in half or quarters, other times I use them in the processor too. Birds seem to enjoy it either way.

Are you sure about the parsley? I'm pretty sure I had seen it on the safe list somewhere. I have fed parsley to my birds in the past with no problems (albeit they've only had it occasionally).

I cant get my Goulds to eat hardboiled egg any which way, have tried all sorts and they simply dont touch it. The quite happily munch their way through Quicko egg food which seems to be their favourite eggfood (they wont touch the other commercial foods.) They love their millet and devour broccoli but that is about it. I might try the celery things and put a whole piece through the bars (thanks for the idea). Oh almost forgot, they now like pak choi as well ( got that one from this forum too!!!)

@ Mexicancanary: You mentioned "boiled seed" in your post; I have never heard of that. Can you explain please?

Yes, I just squish a hardboiled egg (to crack the shell) and toss it all in a food processor (including the shell) for a few seconds. Just long enough to make it light and fluffy - not too long or it will be a gooy-messy paste.

Have you tried mixing the processed hardboiled egg WITH the Quicko eggfood? The best of both worlds!

If not already mentioned on this thread (sorry, I feel cross-eyed today!), I also got the idea from this forum to freeze the egg food into an ice cube tray. Just pop out a cube and it thaws in about 20 min. Rather than chiping away at the egg food in a container.

When my pair was feeding the young, I would put a thawed out cube in their cage, along with a frozen cube that would defrost during the day when I was at work. This way they had a fresh supply for most of the day.

That said, my guys have a preference for the frozen one anyways, and would try to eat that over the thawed one! I was scared that maybe they'd freeze the chick crops, but apparently not!

@ Seasprite.........I boil the egg for about 10 minutes and then when I am ready to use them each day I wash the outer shell off with soap and water and then just pop the whole thing shell included into the processor. I whoosh with the veggie blend I have made and serve with the boiled seeds. The babies love it and are devouring it now....they are 23 and 26 days old. Mom and Dad canary also love it.

In regard to the boiled seed..........I read on one of the websites that it was an alternative option to soak seed. I boil the seed for 15-20 minutes until soft, rinse off in clean water and store it in the refrigerator (no more than 5 days) and I use twice a day for mom and dad and the babies. They love it and they are very healthy. They have received it from the parent canaries since hatching.

Oops  , I forgot about the parsley question: I too read online that it was good in small quantities for canaries and just recently read on another website that it was part of the "toxic" plants.....who knows, I too am confused. I obviously stopped feeding it to my canaries and am relieved nothing happened to them.
