Nerien I remember over the summer we had a bird that would sing away at like 3am. I came to conclusion that he must have been blind. Thankfully I didn't hear him from inside otherwise he might have ended up blind and dead, lol!

Hi fhgwgads,
My Canary Kevin has gotten much louder in his singing over the last year or so. We think he might be deaf or hard of hearing. He is 12 I suppose.
Cheers

Midnight singer was lucky he was doing it in a condo complex. If that dang bird was doing it here, where, although I have neighbors, we essentially live in the woods, we woulda gone a huntin', let me tell you!

We had a little goldbreast that was very loud and very persistent singing a totally different song in the middle of the night than he did in the daylight hours....this is the topic thread on it!

I have heard Charlie sing in the night (Bless his soul) It was when he and Lucy (RIP) were laying their first clutch. I just figured it was normal LOL
The 4 finches I have now are dead silent as soon as it is dark. Right now, they are all meeping and Chic is going to town. He cannot even fertilize an egg and he is the most vocal LOL

Zebrafincher my Sparrow might have some hearing trouble as well as his song is incredibly low and he never discovered how to sound like a finch... although maybe he is just crazy because he likes to chirp like a regular outside bird! He is adorable!
@Nerien LOL! cindy that's incredibly interesting! He had his own little lullaby, lol. Nanajennie Charlie must have been a very happy boy! I think mine sometimes make noises at night because they are just so happy they have to say so even though their instinct is to be quiet. Same reason why when I walk by Shadow in the dark he makes a little pip noise as if he is content and saying hello. Birds are such funny little creatures!

I love my birds singing! I have a very loud canary = 120 decibels, and also a "Meep Meep Beep a lot" Zebbie, and a very soft Star finch (he really is sweet! He sings to his own reflection!)
They really keep me happy.
Hi fhgwgads,
what are the name of your other birds? I've seen several names listed but were not sure of all of them. I saw the video of the 4 babies. They were so sweet.
Kind Regards

Re: Finches breaking out in song... Real late at night.
Lol Nerien !!One summer, so we were attempting to sleep with the windows open, somewhere very close by outside our condo, this dang bird would start singing at midnight and just keep going and going for hours, at full volume. Night after night for about 2 weeks.
The urge to kill was very strong, indeed.
It's summer this side and my canaries are in full singing mode. The little $#%*@ start having singing competitions from about 4am and the aviary is about 3m from my bedroom window. NOT fun on weekends, lol!!! I do love them though

Re: Finches breaking out in song... Real late at night.
Whip-poor-wills and their relatives are famous for calling their names, over and over again, sometime into the thousands of times without stopping.
Northern Mockingbirds are well known night callers, especially if there is a full moon. Enthusiastic mockingbirds can stay up ALL night, mimicking every bird song in the book as well as other sounds such bells, whistles, and sirens.
If the call is coming from a wetland, it is probably one of the two night-herons, the black-crowned or yellow-crowned.
Owls make another kind of noise in the night, which can range from the hooting of great horned owls to the whinnyings of screech-owls.
Some also confuse a squirrel for a bird.

Re: Finches breaking out in song... Real late at night.
We concluded it was a mockingbird, as it sang and sang what would have been beautiful songs if it wasn't at full volume all flippin' night long.
Know the sounds of all the others.
Oh, and don't forget the sound of raccoons fighting during mating season, lived in one place where it turns out their favorite fighting ground was right outside my bedroom window. That one will give you nightmares.
Or the best, one night the most gawd-awful screams were coming from a tree in the yard. Was a smaller raccoon vs an owl up in the branches. At 2 am, of course.
Our wild birds start singing before sun up, especially in the summer when there are so many more types here. Can really get quite loud. Having professional singers right outside your window, wow, that must be bad. Hey, at least they're not crows.

Re: Finches breaking out in song... Real late at night.
Zebrafincher it sounds like you have a lovely bunch! I have 6 zebras.. started off with Shadow a NG male who sounds like a regular zebra with the beeps and meeps and ah-HA's but he does have a pretty nice song somewhat like "meh meh meh meh meh MEH!".. if you can even understand that via text LOL! Basically he doesn't sound like the zebras that have a squeaky wheel song.. (that's the best I can explain it). Then his mate.. Kuri (Japanese for chestnut I believe..) is a fawn black breast female. She is an egg layer! And at first she was very shy and quiet but now she is very trusting in me. Their first clutch only produced one surviving baby.. Shadow. He is my special boy. He is a NG lightback and was born with only one eye and a crossed beak but he eats fine, gets around very well, and is big and beautiful! He loves the girls, has a quiet, soft song that is beautiful, and instead of the usual meeps and beeps he chirps or squeals mostly. He is a bit skittish but he is adorable. He flies amazingly and very smooth and delicate. The second clutch (which was unknown to me until I heard babies because I had to separate Shadow and Sparrow to another cage so he would be weaned and not ignored) produced four girls.. Jayne (a.k.a. Terminator.. because she bullies everyone!), River (a.k.a. Puppy because she makes yipping and squeaking noises all day!!), Calypso (the only one that has a very thin black bar along her chest), and Aurora (who passed young). So those are all my babies! And I love them all dearly!
@debbie276@Nerien I believe the night singer that was in my area was also a mockingbird. I had a mockingbird some by quite often during the day as Sparrow was being weaned (which I am sure I have mentioned NUMEROUS times already, lol) so I think that is why he sounds the way he does. We also have the occasional raccoon going through the garbage. But I must say.. I think the most horrifying noise to hear at night for me at least is when cats make that loud creepy crying whine that sounds like an alien baby. Gives me the chills!!!
Mostly around my area it's sparrows, occasional cardinals, blue jays, Canadian geese, and then grackles (sp?). At other parts of the island there are tons of sea gulls and other marine birds, and crows further out on the island. I find the grackles to me MOST annoying especially since they come by the thousands and cover the entire lawn. But I was pretty annoyed by that one mockingbird because he really made my finches upset! Shadow started making his little bark noises in defense, lol.
