So I woke up today to see in their best that they put lettuce into their nest that was on the clip !!!! They are too funny. And smart too. And we like to open the window blinds so they just sit there sometimes and hang out on the feeder and look out. They really are great pets

Re: Nest material thrown out of the nest???? Why????
My finches love shreds of paper towels, although my old man finch loves to pull whole sheets up to his nest and also paper plates. When I got my first finches years ago I went with boxes of strings. I didn't know what else they could use. I even used to make my own, sterilize them. The things we do for love! This is a different brand than I used. They loved them because they fluffed up and mad a soft nest. It's a little box but it really filled a large area when fluffed up. Mine only cost $1.99 back in the day though. I like what you're using Brian. I had to laugh. Mine put lettuce in their nest also. It scares you sometimes when you don't expect it. http://www.amazon.com/8in1-eCotrition-N ... B0002ASZRS

Re: Nest material thrown out of the nest???? Why????
That's almost all of what I give. Paper towels and toilet paper bits.
With the paper towel, I run them through the paper shredder or just tear them into small bits.
I'm too nervous about string-type materials and they play with the timothy hay, but don't use it as nesting.
They totally ignore the coconut hair.

Re: Nest material thrown out of the nest???? Why????
My finches just love the coco fiber and paper towels, so I give them some of both and add emu feathers. I think all my finches at least play with all of these, but only some use them all in the nest. Many try to take the plastic leaves off and use those in the nests. If I see them doing that, I get some dried grass and leaves that were not treated with pesticides and I wash them and let them dry in the sun. Then, give that to them. Most love grasses and plant material from the yard. I had one pair you used dried grass I saved after mowing the yard. Again, I don't treat out yard with pesticides.

When I give them nesting paper towel, I rip it in half, put it together, in half again, and keep doing that until it becomes small rectangles. They're just big enough. Then I put them in a deep bowl. I was putting just into the cage lose but they end up out the sides and under the wire bottom...mostly. You may have another preferred method.

Something that my guys enjoy playing with and building as well, is dry grass; like left over grass clippings after you cut the lawn. Also wild dry grasses as well. Another thing is kleenex ripped into strips, which is light enough for them to carry in their beaks.

I use paper towels and also some fluffy white nesting material I found at the pet store,,,,,
they really seem to like it when I stick pieces between the bars of the cage all over the place and let them find it,,,,,,
I also put some between the hay in their hay ball for them to discover,,,,,
they really like that hay ball,,,,,,,
