Strange beak problem

Hi Brette, Fortunately the cage he was in is 36" long. 72"high. 18" deep. There is a pair of stars and his mate in the cage. The cage is on my front porch. The aviaries are in the backyard. I was just wondering if I should treat as a preventative. The cage and the aviaries?

I still find this hard to believe that this is scaly mite. I have never seen a finch with scaly...but I guess it could happen. In the petstore I worked at we would occaisionally get a budgie in with scaly. It would start very slowly and it takes a while to reach the awful porportions in the budgie pictures.
Maybe by simply removing the growth the bird could breath again. Nothing will take the life and ability to fly out of a bird like restricted oxegen. Maybe his improvement has to do with being able to breath, eat and the air drying up his sores? Never, ever seen scaly mites create a smooth appearance...always a 'scaly appearance....
I am just glad he is doing better.

I am just guessing that is what it is but I am really not positive. The covering was real flaky like mica. The feel and texture was like gypsum. Or Satin Spur. Real powdery underneath. it appeared the sores were there and not cause by my removing the growth. I really hope someone sees this and has a clue.

I wasn't thinking you caused the sores from removing the growth...I thought maybe just lack of air and the moisture from a runny nose...
Kind of like what would happen to your feet if you wore wet socks for days.....
How long did it take to grow like that?

I've had the bird for about 2 months. When I got the bird home I remember thinking, Wow he has a big beak. But it was nothing like it is in the first pick I posted. It did not look deformed just big. The crack happened the day I posted with the problem.

I am now convinced that the problem was just an overgrowth. The bird is doing fine and looks a lot better. I do need to wait a few more days and do some more trimming on the beak. I set up a new cage for him and the female. I dont think the female recognizes him cause she has been ignoring him. However I am looking in the cage now and they are sitting next to each other. I will post a pic as soon as I get to a store to buy some batteries for my camera.

Glad to hear he is doing good. I would think in the case of scaly mites his mate would of been infected too.
