I was surprised when I got home today to find one of the owls had fledged! I just banded them a week ago tomorrow so I was calculating that fledging would be around July 16th - but this one just couldn't wait. S/he is fully feathered and perching and doing great. Mom and dad were taking great care of him/her. Now s/he is backup in the nest for the night.

The male is an excellent father. Thanks Liz. I'm sure they give me many more healthy chicks, but I hope not too many too soon.
I think female is starting a new clutch. Today she gave me that look from the nest.

How do they like your nest (from the last picture)? I see it is not that high in the cage. I have the same cage and in my opinion the opening on the side of the cage is too low for a nest.

They went into the plastic nestbox but they did not choose it for their nest site. They picked the tube nest which is at the very top of the opposite side of the breeding cage. You are probably right about the plastic nestbox not being high enough but there is no way else to put it higher from the outside; and there are no hooks on the back of it to hang it inside the cage.

I wonder if it were the only nesting site available - would they accept it or would they just not breed until something higher was available? I really do not like the tube nest - it's just too hard to get the chicks out to band. They were hanging on so tight inside I was worried they would break a leg with my trying to get them out. I was as gentle as possible with them and trying to hurry at the same time to get the banding done as quickly as possible and return them (with the nest) to the cage and parents.

How are they doing now, Igor? Are they on a second clutch - are the eggs about to hatch?

I didn't realize that my pair of Owls are sitting on their second clutch and the babies from the first clutch are not weaned yet. I didn't really want more owls at this time but what can you do. They are proving to be almost like Zebras!!!

I guess once they get going they can be very prolific. I always wonder how they would act in a large flock with lots of space. (I just have four owls but I am intrigued with how they interact.) I'll bet you would see fun owl behavior that you wouldn't get otherwise.

Darn... I need some more owls wish you all weren't so far away!

They are sneaky, they pop those eggs right up under the babies. Live incubators free of charge, well...kind of they work for food!

I was cleaning the cage on the weekend and looked inside the nest; it had at least 4 eggs. I'm not sure that they are sitting tight on them. They always out of the nest when I'm in the room. The due date for this clutch is on the next day or two. I really don't need more owls at this moment. I have only one band size A left in stock.

I know what you mean - I am getting low on all my bands too. You can go up to size B's. Just band them later.
