Flight Rooms?

Post by jimlas43 » Tue Jan 19, 2010 4:46 pm

Forgot why I was responding to this post in the first place :o)
As far as a door for your room...
This bedroom that I took over has the heat control for the upstairs bedrooms in it so I had to be able to have the air move freely but in the same time keep out my cat's. The only way to do that was to find a screen door that fit the demensions of an inside door jam and that wasn't easy. I finally found an old antique screen door that had a nice solid wood frame and sturdy screen that the cats couldn't go through.
I love it! I had to sand it down and repaint it but it was well worth it.
I love my bird room! Gouldians, Owl's, Shafttails, Green Singers,Gray Singers, Cordon Bleus, Red Headed Parrots, Orange Cheeks, Stars, Canaries, and lot's of babies :o)

The door to my aviary is a screen door frame as well, I just replaced the screen with coated wire mesh. (Since my birds are free flying in the aviary screen door mesh is not good, I read they can get caught in it.) I was lucky, it's a standard screen door for sliding glass doors. My aviary is a former sunroom that was built by the previous owner of the house as extension instead of part of the back deck. So the door was already an "outside" sliding glass door...
The disadvantage is that there is no heating, so I have an extra heater in the aviary in winter.

Your idea with a screen door that fits an inside door for the birdroom is great!

Fortunately my husband shares my craziness and didn't have any objections turning the sunroom (that we rarely used) into an aviary. Without his help I couldn't have done it and couldn't keep up with the ongoing work. :-) (Don't ask me what some of our family members opinion is, though... That's what's so nice about this forum, you find out you're not the only crazy person...)
Walk-in aviary with Waxbills (6 Cordon Bleu, 3 Orange Cheek, 3 Black-rumped, 1 Lavender, ), 1 European Goldfinch, 4 Gouldians, 2 Spice Finches, 6 Owl Finches, 4 Budgies and 2 male Button Quail.
I also have 2 parrotlets, 3 dogs, 1 snake and 3 freshwater fishtanks.
