What are your birds favorite greens?

hi! my zebras and spice finches love field greens and spinach. they ignore the dish if it has carrots or broccoli mixed in it. they dont seem interested in apples or grapes. thanks for the tips!

I usually give them what we get from the veggie guy at the local grocery store
- green and red lettuce
- romain lettuce
- kale (not often)
- chard

To this
- carrots and carrot skin

All this is CHOPPED UP small, so it is easy for me to scoop out and serve.

Occassionally
- slices from cantelope

I had not thought of bell pepper. My wifes canary refuses to eat it, and my wife does not like the smell of it, so I don't buy it.

I try not to make too much work of the veggies, as then it would be a real chore and I would stop.

Here are my birds munching on green sprouted grass . They absolutely love it also apples ,broccoli , carrots,waffles, bread crumps , anything green. It helps I have mix aviary with canaries - they will eat anything so the other birds are naturally attracted to what ever the canaries eats.

Love the pictures of your birds eating the grass. How long does it take them to destroy all of it? Nice setup, BTW.

Thx . Sally , It only takes a couple of days but I already have new sprouting going on . I keep three flower pads where I constantly have enough grass or millet grass that way They always have a fresh supply.

Mine love dandelion and cucumber. I had no idea regular old grocery stores sold dandelion until I got finches. XD

Mine never used to eat any greens at all.

But now they love - Cucumber, Broccoli, Carrot, Peas, Corn. Just had to be patient.

Romaine, cucumbers and broccoli. I 'shave' the heads off half of the broccoli, some start eating it that way. Most will pick the seed heads off.

If you can put them UP, clip to a branch or wire next to a perch - they are much more likely to eat them as opposed to on the floor.

Mine love kale. If it isn't kale, it isn't food apparently. But I've been getting them onto other greens. There's alot of good ideas in this thread! XD

Yeah, it's a bit hit or miss which stores have it--Stater Brothers is the store that consistently has dandelion greens out here in CA, but if none of the grocery stores in your area have it, apparently many whole foods stores have them, and if you're in Chicago, you could check Whole Foods Market if there's one close enough to you. (I think there's one or two of them in Chicago?)
