Looks like mine that I run through a potato ricer. I was going for the "worm" look.

Re: Eggfood

I use a commercial egg food made locally here. Avi-plus egg food with added vit / herbs (including rosemary and aniseed which the birds love). The smell of it when I open a bag is tempting even to me.
Its makes up about 1/5 of a mix with sprouted seeds and veg. Empty bowls by 1pm so I have no worries about it going rancid.
There really are so many mixes out there. I tried fresh eggs etc. My birds were not keen. They like their commercially scientifically balanced egg food. LOL they are spoilt brats.
When I have young in the nest I replenish bowls in the evening too.

Re: Eggfood
I use a cheese/food grater that has two choices on it - one large and one that is smaller - I use the smaller of the two. I tried to find a picture online but no such luck - will post a picture tonight.B CAMP wrote:Thanks i will try that next time

I go for the worm look too - it works but not with that ricer! My "worms" looked squished, flat and dead!debbie276 wrote:Looks like mine that I run through a potato ricer. I was going for the "worm" look.

Re: Eggfood
Mine prefer real eggs now over any mix - but they still eat the Orlux Gold (thank God)!monotwine wrote:I have to show my husband your piccies. He thinks mine currently get pampered! with me adding the occasional boiled quail egg to the mix.

My birds are spoiled for sure - get up early to feed the little turds! They won't eat the eggfood if it comes out of the refrigerator cold - no matter what I do to it - but they gobble it up if I make it fresh each morning and when so many babies are in the nest I do what they want! Especially those baby Grens!

My one handtame "Mary" has 4 babies of her own right now and every morning she is all over me until she gets exactly what she wants

Has anyone used the Slap Chop for eggfood? I've always wondered if that would work.

Re: Eggfood
We only get one type of commercial egg food here. Don't remember the name. It's expensive and my birds won't touch it.
If I can get organic shoots/sprouts in the grocery store or baby salad greens I will offer. Sometimes they eat it.
My sister-in-law came into my kitchen and saw all the different foods laid out on the counter, as I was getting ready to make a batch of bird food. She exclaimed and got all excited that 'we' were eating really healthily. You should have seen her face when I told her it was bird food.
I boil about a dozen eggs at time. Put them through the mini chopper or mash them. Package them into smaller portions and freeze. When I feed in the morning I add some small freeze dried worms (fish food) and everyone eats happily.
I tried adding broccoli, carrot, wheat germ, ground oats, and ground barley. The gouldians ate it
, the zebras rejected it and tossed the 2 baby chicks I didn't know they had.
I also soak some of the bird seed and offer it either sprouting or just soaked. They all love that. I even have had the seeds growing in small pots so that I could just put a small pot in the cage at a time. The birds devoured that. Just haven't had the time to plant more.

In answer to your question Mike. Been there, done that. It didn't work for me, the blades got all gunked up and the egg pieces weren't small enough.mike wrote:Has anyone used the Slap Chop for eggfood? I've always wondered if that would work.

I was at Walmart on the weekend and I was looking for a Magic Bullet, wondering if that might work. Then I saw the Slap Chop at the register, lol. I'm glad to hear it didn't work before I bought one ;)lovemyfinch wrote:In answer to your question Mike. Been there, done that. I actually just use one of the really cheap electric choppers Mike. $10-$12 dollars at Walmart. have the black and decker, and it works great. Only downfall is that I only chop 2 eggs at a time, but the consistancy(spell check) is perfect.

Sounds good! What's the brand name? I might give it a try. My mom squishes up egg with a fork but she has one bad arm so I think it gets hard for her. She doesn't complain but they never do.lovemyfinch wrote:I actually just use one of the really cheap electric choppers Mike. $10-$12 dollars at Walmart. have the black and decker, and it works great.
