Penelope is starting to get a bit better today. She is honking a lot more and is flying around the cage. She still looks like she is having balance issues, but it isn't nearly as bad as yesterday. I checked by her vent, and I couldn't see the lump there anymore. I still am feeding her the baby food to help her weight. I don't think she is totally out of the woods just yet though.

I'm glad she is doing better! Post an update on Sunday, and if her condition is still questionable I will overnight some Baytril on Monday - you'd have it Tuesday. Even if you don't end up using it, it may offer you some relief to know that you have it on hand. :?

Thanks so much for the offer! I'll be sure to post an update tomorrow then. I did order some Baytril from ladygouldianfinch.com, but I have yet to receive an email saying that they have sent it out. That probably won't be until Monday or something. I also ordered some of the Avi-Culture probiotic, which I will give to her after the round of Baytril treatments.

That's great. Lady Gouldian is really good at getting things out quickly. You should be fine, but post anyway. We are all concerned about Penelope. 8-[

Penelope is still continuing her recovery. She is still having issues keeping her balance, but the incidents aren't occurring as often. She loves the baby food so much. When she sees me coming to the cage with it, she starts honking and flying in little circles by the front of the cage. I put about a spoonful in the cage, and it was almost gone a few hours later.

Thanks so much for all the thoughts and well wishes! She isn't quite back to her old self, but I feel like I can get some good sleep now. I honestly didn't think she was going to make it. She just looked so beat down, but she once again has proven to be one tough bird.

Penelope passed away this evening. I found her acting sick again today. She couldn't keep her balance at all, not on perches or flat surfaces. She would sit in the corner or in the food dish huddled up and sleeping. I put the baby food in the cage, but she didn't seem interested in eating it. She just sat there and would let me scoop her up with no fight at all. I could feel her keel sticking out, so I tried to feed her, but she wouldn't take it. I have some quick medicine for digestive problems that she was drinking from the syringe in my hand. I put her back down in the cage, and she just kind of fell on her side and stay there looking up at me for help. I scooped her up again, and she died in my hand.

I don't know how to explain it, but when I first saw her today, I could just tell that she wasn't going to make it. She looked up at me and the expression in her eyes told me that she was just tired.

I am going to get her a little box for a casket and bury her in my flower bed. Ideally, I would like to get one big enough so that I can put her mate, Pep-Pep, in with her whenever his time comes.

Rest in Peace, my darling Penelope.

Thanks everyone for your kind words...

Penelope was the one finch that I was especially attached to. I bought her when I lived in an apartment during school. I wasn't supposed to have pets, but I kept her there for three weeks before going home and introducing her to her mate. Her and I would talk for hours. I would talk, and she would respond with honks. I would make a special sound to let her know I was coming into the room or uncovering her cage. Even after she was moved into the cage with the other birds, she would still respond whenever I made her special noise.

I didn't know what to do as far as her mate, since they weren't in the same cage anymore. They used to call to each other from across the room, but they stopped a few days ago. I didn't think he would understand what was going on if I showed him the body. I think that they both knew it was going to happen. My only regret is that I didn't put them together one last time.

I made a casket for her. It is big enough for Pep-Pep whenever his time comes. I don't have any artistic ability to draw on it or anything. My girlfriend is the artist, but she is on vacation in Paris this week. I am writing a personal note to her, which will be buried with her.
