Re: Eggfood
The soft food I have been feeding is mostly Miracle Meal - dry on top of the seed. Sometimes I add a few teaspoons of Quiko Exotic, too. On top of this I sprinkle Hatched, a pinch of Avian Trio and AviGreens. The breeder I purchased my finches from also works full time (I don't know how she does it!)and is not around to pull out fruits and veggies or moistened soft food that has been sitting too long. So, she feeds dried greens and herbs to her birds and soft foods are also fed dry - and I have found that mine won't touch fresh stuff! That's why I got the AviGreens powdered supplement and I also sprinkle Health Greens (which is mostly alfalfa) on top of the millet spray. Her birds certainly look healthy and happy. I have tried hard boiled egg - won't touch that, either. I guess it's what they are used to and raised on. Go figure
!

Re: Eggfood
We live in a rather warm climate and leaving eggood (boiled egg) out all day is just not a good idea. When home i change it out 3 times a day. I also leave the dried down.

Re: Eggfood
I usually only feed what would be consumed in a short period. When I get home the eggfood is usually gone. But lately since making the change the eggfood is mostly untouched.
I don't like the parents depending on mostly seeds when feeding babies. Of course they also have greens and chitted seed. I've noticed a huge difference in the quality of the babies when being fed a good homemade eggfood vs. only having the dry commercial eggfood.

Re: Eggfood
I notice no difference in shaftails, one clutch was boiled eggs, another mealies and another a combination of dried ABBA92 and pellets mixed with Miracle Meal...no difference in the young....just my pocketbook!!!!

Re: Eggfood
lol
No, I only meant a difference in clutches by giving them eggfood with other things vs. just dry egg food only.

Re: Eggfood
Since I'll have some Society babies hatching any day now I am very interested in the egg food debate. I've been feeding my birds (that are on the nest) home made egg food since I'm home most days. Lately they've been turning their beak up at it.
Do you think they get tired of the same recipe?
Would it be okay to use ground up walnuts in their egg food?
Is there anything you should not put in the egg food when the parents are feeding chicks?
Is it okay to mix in chickweed and dandelion greens when they're feeding chicks or put it to the side?
Sorry about all the questions
just want to have lots of good food for the parents to feed their young... when they decide to show their little naked faces.

Re: Eggfood
If I mix anything in the boiled grated egg, they will not eat it!

Re: Eggfood
Mine love ground nuts in their egg food. I put all the greens 'to the side' but that's just my preference.

Re: Eggfood
thanks! I put the greens and veggies on the side too. I'm always afraid if I put them with the egg they'll go bad. Even I like fresh salad. Not something that's been cut up in the fridge for 3 days. I have to make a new batch of egg food tomorrow so I'll grind up the walnuts and put them in. Heck, I'd eat it if it wasn't for the shells..

Re: Eggfood
I would keep the greens to the side. Anything you want can go in the egg food, I just would not dilute the protein content with a lot of low protein additives.

Re: Eggfood
Walnut shells? Where'd that come from? You must have one heck of a processor if it will grind up walnut shells and live through it! I too think they would be indigestible by finches. I think walnuts have a lot of oil in them too... just from my experience of eating them (sans shells).

Re: Eggfood
I don't use nut shells with my nut meal, either...? But, my birds do love the nut meal. Nut meal is discussed earlier in this post I believe -- it has high protein and wonderful vitamins and natural oils that are beneficial to birds.
