Thanks Ruth...Im really enjoying them. I want to get a pretty chaise for the bird room, so i can be comfy when im watching them. I love the modified tray for the partotlet cage!!! Awesome idea! That would work well for my little bumble foot buddy. I bought pumice ledges for him to rest on in the small animal section. They're so smooth and a perfect size for a few finches to snuggle on.

Nerien Hahaha... well,, I will try to finagle something LOL I haven't been on vacation in 5 years, and I could never afford it at this point, (the Gov Shutdown really cut into my income) and Dr Palm is an amazing employer. I am blessed and excited to see Ginene and go on the cruise... I love your inventions too! Very creative~ You are so smart!

Geri (fawn owl) keeps laying eggs...I am feeling TEMPTED to put the owls in the breeding cage after quarantine

. What species is harder to breed for a newbie like me??? Owls or Green Singers???

My owls weren't a problem as long as I didn't peek at them. I mean don't even look in their direction!!

Now that they are older and pro's at nesting they are fine with nest checks and breed without a problem at all.
I've never had Green Singers so can't compare the two.

I breed both - Owls and Green Singers. Here, I find the owls to definitely need privacy - but the Green Singers even more so. For the Green Singers, I cover the outside their cage with a sheet and arrange dense greenery around the nest so they feel as safe as they can be.

I know others like to feed just egg food, but I've had good success with live mealworms and use those. There is always a straight-sided ceramic cup with wriggling mealworms in with each pair during breeding season. They don't take many before the babies are born, but feed them voraciously to the babies. I find mealworm presence in the cage really helps.

It also helps a lot if the pair is bonded and in great breeding condition. Green Singers will be extremely active and the male will be singing up a storm for much of the day. There will be a lot of chasing and general flying back and forth. Owls here are not as dramatic as the GS about entering breeding mode, but males will sing more often - and there will be lots of allopreening and chasing. I've found if the pair is truly "an item" - totally devoted to each other and their job - all the rest becomes much less important.

Just keep an eye on them and observe. By the time you are ready to breed, you will likely know which pair is more ready than the other or have found some other criteria for a choice.

This is a fun dilemma!!

. Its fun to think about!!! I love having a couple of breeding options...which is why I only have a few hens. So far both pairs are getting along well. The singers are very active and Lenny sings more each day

. The owls are intimidated by the stars...hopefully this will change when I take the divider out of the giant flight and they have more space to share. Visibly, what would a fawn hen and normal cock produce???

Fawn in owls is sex-linked recessive, so hens need one copy and cannot be split and males need two and can be split.

If your male is not split to fawn (Normal/Normal), all the male babies from this pair will be visually normal and split to fawn (Normal/Fawn). All the female babies will be normal and not split to anything (Normal/_____).

If your male is split to fawn (Normal/Fawn), you will get some fawn (Fawn/_____) and some normal (Normal/______) hens (none split to anything) and some fawn males (Fawn/Fawn) and some normal males who would all be split to fawn (Normal/Fawn).
