fall expansion

Post by kylegood » Mon Oct 25, 2010 11:41 pm

well as i'm sure many of you have done at one point or another, i decided that i needed more space for the birds. originally i was going to turn my front deck into a sunroom/birdroom but its a big job and i didn't get around to doing it this summer. In time i hope to carry out that plan, taking all the time in the world to make sure that i dont say "gee, i wish i would have done this like that" when its too late.

anyways... some of you may remember the big indoor flight i built a while ago that was 6ft x 2ft x 4ft. i altered that one so its 6 ft high now. and yesterday and today i added an 11ft x 2.5ft x 6ft section. so now i have more room for birds and no dining room!!!!!
its almost done just have to add the floor and its good to go! i will be adding some gouldians, and button quail. but not much more than i have now.

the only thing that i am unsure of is what colour to paint the plywood backing. any suggestions? i was thinking of staining it, but then i was thinking that just white paint would be the best for reflecting light and viewing the birds.

My "diningroom" is a birdroom too... along with the "conservatory room" and the "room between".

You will love the change!

Thanks for the replies, I am still unsure on painting the back. I want to keep it simple. And make the birds and plants stand out. I think I will end up painting in white, as I will be able to get the best white balance that way for photographing. But I won't e getting to that for a week so I'm still looking for all the input I can get!
Thanks!

It is really looking nice so far! I also use my dining room as a bird room.

Good luck with choosing a color....so many options to think about. :-k

Wow! I'm so jealous! Wondered why I hadn't seen you on here for awhile and now I know. You've sure been busy. This will look fantastic when it's full of birds. =D>

Yes franny, I have been away for a while partly because I have had nothing to add to the forum, so I just lurked around here and there. I haventt seen much for local birdmarts recently so I haven't made any new aquisitions. My girlfriend also adopted a horse so I have helped out at the farm where she boards. Been giving done thought to picking up a paint brush again after a 6 year hiatus. The second I graduates university and received a fine arts degree I stopped painting?????
I hope you are well also!!! And how are your gouldians?

That's a nice size! I ask because my daughter bought a "pair" that turned out to be two males and she cannot keep them together in an aviary. The males need so much space to fly especially when in breeding plumage with their loooooong tails. :D

It's true, I love the way they look but they are very aggressive birds, I don't think I would ever buy again, they are also a parasitic breeder and each of the whydah species has a different preferred host parent so breeding is more difficult than I would like it to be.

so i'm still not completely done yet. i have to get wood for the floor. and i haven't decided if i should paint the back, i feel like it would be a waste to paint it and then not like it. i spent today put the hardware on (lock and hinges) and i also finished the timers and lighting. all thats left is the floor. i dont know if i will get to it tomorrow as there is a dog show i am going to!
o well. next weekend.

If it were me I would go with a light color - white or a pastel color as this will help reflect the light too. I would at least seal the wood so you can wipe it down and not have to worry about water or poop damage over time.

Otherwise the flight looks awesome - wonderful job =D>
