Did I Just Buy A Spice Finch?....Not Sure

Post by FeatherHarp » Mon Mar 07, 2011 4:01 pm

I just come home with a new little birdie. I am not positive if it is a Spice Finch or not...his coloring is different than the spice finches I looked at in the Finch Info Center. I am hoping somebody can tell me for sure. Maybe he is a crossbreed?

I got him from a local pet store and they called them European Finches. I was hoping to find another Society to replace the one I lost and to be a buddy for my other single Society. But they didn't have any.

There were only three of them and they all looked alike in feathering but two were much smaller than the third one. I got the larger finch. He was $19.99 so I don't know if that was a fair deal or not.

Is there a size difference between male and female spice finches (if that is what he is). This guy is almost twice as big as the other two.

I plan to put him in with the my Owl pair and single society after the quarantine time. Hopefully he won't be a bully.

Here is a photo of my new mystery finch. :D

I named him "XL" because he was so much bigger than the other ones.

I found a picture of one that looks very similar to yours online. The website where I saw it called it a Euro Black Brown Bengalese Finch. Try googling that, and many things come up. Hope it helps!
Whatever you've got, he's quite handsome!

Many of the European bred finches, especially the societies and zebras, are very much larger than our american bred.
He is beautiful!!!

I had one just like that, they are a European Society. Beautiful little birds and he had such a beautiful song, different then the normal societies. He was a sweety too. I heard they were hard to breed and not good parents. Mine would take better care of my other societies babies better then the parents. :)

Good luck with him,
Renee

That is one handsome Society. I have never seen one like that, but would like to have one. Very nice. =D>

Thanks all. My other Society seems pretty excited when he hears the new society chirping. I don't know if XL is a girl or boy....I have not heard him sing at all...he just makes cricket like noises. But I am sure my other society knows already... they have been chatting across the room to each other all afternoon.

I think he's VERY handsome! I have also read that they are not very good parents but maybe XL will prove them wrong.

I don't think so JohnBoy....SHE is all mine! [-X :D

Well I am pretty sure my new birdie is a Female as she has not done any singing at all so I figured I better rename her. I don't think any gal would like to have the name of "XL" even if she is a plus-sized bird.

I decided to call her "Pearl". My other male society is named "Parfait" so Parfait and Pearl it will be. So now I have Pearl & Parfait, Buzz & Beebop (my Owl pair) and my Bourke's parakeets are named Littlefoot & Ladybird. Can you tell I like matching names?

I have included a new photo of Pearl in a more relaxed pose.
