Flight Project - part 1

Post by Mozelle » Wed Mar 23, 2011 12:53 pm

I just got this display cabinet off of Kijiji (love that site!)
It's Much nicer than I expected to find, and they sold it to me for 1/2 price - woohoo :D
So... now begins the conversion.
I have seriously considered plexiglass for a front - which is my ideal, but not affordable at the moment. So I'm going with galvanized wire - which is the Only thing I can find in this city that's at all suitable.
After some research I understand that washing this with a strong vinegar solution will remove any zinc residue from the wire (from the galvanizing process). If I was housing hookbills there's no way I'd use this wire, but it seems to be fine for non-chewing birds.
I have a load of ideas in my head on plans for
- access through the wire fronting and possibly the sides as well.
- creating perches with local willow (and possibly a large enough branch that it will look like a tree in the center)
- possibly adding pegboard to the back side for easy mounting of feeders/waterers/nests...
But I could use a LOT more!
If you've got ideas - I would LOVE to hear them... ALL of them!
Please..... [-o<

They even left the speakers attached at the top - Music for my birds!
What I'm finding amazing is that my reluctant hubby is coming up with ideas for this as well. Hmmmm.... may convert him yet ;-)

Today I clean and paint the wire, and pick up some peg board for the back.

and it begins....

have you finished the project? Or have I missed a new post? I'm sure it turned out beautiful! Something weird is happening to me now.... I see a piece of furniture like a cabinet or even chest of drawers, I wonder how I can turn it into a flight cage!!
