Another Cuban Baby fledged today!

Post by L in Ontario » Fri Apr 01, 2011 6:31 pm

And he is sooooooooooooo darn cute and that's no April Fool's joke! He's now banded and back on his (and his mom's) side of the cage. I'm so glad I put the divider in last week so dad could not interfere with any possible chicks when they fledge. He's known (to me) for plucking the male chicks severely as they fledge.

I've no idea if there are any more to come out or not - I have no way of checking the nest without destroying it. #-o

Thank you all! He truly is one of the cutest ones to fledge since he is fully feathered (for a change). Too bad he can't quite perch yet. Silly boy. Momma sure was trying to get him back up and into the nest by calling and calling.

I've had them fledge previously and they would fly back into the nest before I could catch them to band them. #-o

Thank you so much Misty.

This one is definitely a male as the yellow around his face is much brighter already than his mother! He's well on his way to being a beautiful boy!

Congrats, Liz, on such a nice healthy-looking fledgling! Are there more in the nest?

What kind of bands do you use?
What size are they?
Are they split or whole?

I use AACC closed bands - size B for Cubans. They have to be banded the day they come out of the nest... and they love to curl their toes! #-o

I checked the nest as siblings are usually the same age and I wanted to be able to band them all BUT there are NO other chicks. This boy is an only child this time round. I removed the nest and the bamboo nest that was under it so there is no nest in there now. After this guy is weaned, I'll put an outside canary nest on that they can build in like Chase (and Jerry) have on their breeding cages.

The little one has perched this morning! =D>

=D> =D> =D> for perching.
Being an only child was probably the reason he came out looking soo good.
