Re: Dry Egg food?
You can add some Dry Eggfood from a petstore....That will soak up extra moisture

Re: Dry Egg food?
I mix a teaspoon or two of cornmeal into 2-1/2 hardboiled eggs, then chop it all up in a mini-food processor. That seems to do the trick for me. I used to also put a spoon of commercial egg food mix into the egg, but I now just add the cornmeal.
Someone else on the forum told me to try to put the boiled egg into the fridge overnight before chopping up, and the fridge will draw the moisture out of the egg. Problem is I usually wait too long and need it immediately so I don't do this.
The other thing is to spread the egg mix out on a shallow dish. This lets the egg dry w/o having wet spots that could spoil.
I put a small spoon of egg on a dish w a spoon of veggies and a spoon of seeds. This rarely lasts more than a few hours, so I don't worry about the egg spoiling.

Re: Dry Egg food?
Thank-you
i have been boiling 1 egg let it sit over night then in the morning i put it in my magic bullet with some bread crumbs then blend that, next i add 1 and a half tbl spoon of the dry egg food mix ( i use Hagen Tropimix Budgie, Canary & Finch Egg Food Mix) stir that around with my spoon then put a small spoonful in their treat dish.do you think that, that would be safe out without spoiling? the texture looks crumbly not to moist but i want to becareful cause i know how bad food makes us feel and i dont want that for my finches

Re: Dry Egg food?
Depending how many finches you have. I only put out enough that they will eat it all in 2-3 hours.
I put my egg into a plastic bowl w a screw on lid. This keeps in the fridge for about 3-4 days. It is usually used up by the 4th day, faster if I have birds with chicks. Beyond about 4 days it starts to smell, then I dump it. Most of the birds seem to know when the egg is going bad (starting to smell) and won't eat it. That is my hint to make a new batch.

Try to spread it out on a lid or something that way it dries out and don't spoil after you mix with the dry egg food at least mine don't

Re: Dry Egg food?
I would toss that if its been in today.
If you have 4 zebs i would boil a few eggs and give them some each day with the store egg food and just put the other eggs in plastic bag in fridg. for the next few days but i would remove whats left each day and toss

Re: Dry Egg food?
Doug Taylor who invented the Green Day diet that a lot of people use leaves his plates of food until the next day. If you check his website he discusses this and says that most of the egg food is eaten early and the birds know when the egg isn't good any more. I have been doing that too without problem. I work and so can't count on getting home at any set hour. Of course I am still a fledgling and have only had finches for about 4 months. With his green day diet egg mix I have never noticed any spoilage if you make it the way he says to.
Hope that helps,
Lori

Re: Dry Egg food?
I just add exact handfeeding formula to hard boiled eggs to dry it out a bit, spread it thinly on a plate and throw out whatever is still on the plate next morning. Been doing it for years without any problems.

Re: Dry Egg food?
Here is a picture of a batch of eggfood that I made this morning.
It is based on the greenday diet, which means that everything goes into one dish. They will pick out what they want and need on that day. Usually the dish is empty before bedtime.
I add either handfeeding formula or Orlux dry eggfood for finches. Right now everyone is getting it mixed with the Orlux being as how it has some litte bugs in it, and I have shafties about to fledge.

Re: Dry Egg food?
I use the Green Day diet, though I do vary in that I make mine even drier--my birds seem to like it that way. Basically, I am adding 2 cups dry material to every 12 eggs, plus the wheat germ oil, cod liver oil, and veggies (1 cup veggies to 2 cups eggfood). I am overly generous with the mixture, so when I clean out the dishes the next morning, there is often some left. It is so dry that I can just sweep it out of the dish and the dish is still clean enough to reuse. Have had no problems doing it this way, and it is far easier on me. I have many friends who are still working, and they do the same.
If you want to go with a dry commercial eggfood, I have just started using Volkman's Gourmet Eggfood, and my birds love it!

Re: Dry Egg food?
This has been a good thread for My education as well
I make a large batch of egg food every couple of weeks. I keep a small portion in the fridge for a couple of days feeding, and the rest I divide into small well-sealed containers and freeze.
The colour changes with the freezing, but they still go at it like I just made it fresh.
The best thing I Love about making my own is that I can add whatever I think may be beneficial to it. I also tend to be generous with it, and though I'm off work for a few weeks (another story..
) when I am working some of it is still there when I get home at the end of the day.
They seem to do just fine.
I think we need to understand that perhaps birds are a lot smarter than they are often given credit for. They Do seem to know what it best for them most of the time.
