Help sexing orange weavers

Post by dpedersen » Tue Apr 26, 2011 5:13 pm

I bought orange weavers yesterday to keep in their own aviary this summer. The one I *know* is male is almost in full breeding color :D He's gorgeous! The other one I picked up, they were unsure of the sex and nothing I'm finding indicates one or the other. I'll try to get pics soon, but here is the info I have:
-The male sings and hisses and charges toward the other bird. I've read that courtship displays of Orange weavers look pretty scary, so I don't know. It seems like aggression to me. He isn't constantly doing this, but every couple hours for a minute or so. I separated them just in case.
-The female/juvenile has blotchy orange on part of the breast. Not the dark bright orange like full color males exhibit, but pale orange/dark yellow.
ADULTS:
4 zebras, 2 bronzewings, 2 green singers & 2 owls

JUVENILES:
2 hand tame zebras- Julius & Caesar

CHICKS:
5 zebra fledglings, 2 handfed owl nestlings

If it has any orange or black patches, it's almost certainly a male. Females are permanently dull brown sparrow-coloured birds. Young and non-breeding males resemble the female and only color up into their orange and black colouring during the breeding season.
