Babies and Meds

Post by Mozelle » Tue May 10, 2011 10:14 am

Just had one of my hens, who was a part of a trio caring for 6 eggs, die. She's been out of the group for 3 days after I noticed her being fairly unresponsive while sitting in the nest. Took it to be just sleepiness (it Was 10 pm) but the next morning she was clearly not healthy. I removed her and started treating her with heat/humidity/electrolytes. She seemed to be coming around, but last night looked poorly, and this morning was on the bottom of the cage. :(
The solid portion of her droppings was solid and a light beige. I couldn't see any undigested food, but then she had seed scattered around and it would have been hard to tell. Her vent was wet - quite. Her keel is clearly distinguished, even though I'd seen her eating.
Since the day I got her (months ago) she's had a "gimpy" leg that never quite held her right and hampered her getting around. With a few aviary modifications she did fine, but it did seem to bother her more lately.
She's been such a devoted mother sitting on those eggs the last 10 days, and I wonder if that was simply more comfortable for her than perching. But also that the comfort was such that she neglected getting out for food/water. I did see her out.. but rarely now that I think about it.
So.. finally .. should I treat the the other two caring for the eggs. Have the eggs been compromised? And can I treat the other birds.. but with what? At the moment they look well.
Also - her cage was close to the new babies cage, they're nearly ready to fledge. I have included vitalize into the water in that cage, and vitamins. Worried if I should be including anything else, and if so.. what.
Sigh - sorry for the long post. But having lost a number of birds before, I"m terrified of another illness in the birdroom.

I'm sorry to hear about your little hen Tracy! If the others don't seem sick I wouldn't think it would be a good idea to treat them for something they 'might' have. Electrolytes are always good. Wish I could help but I don't have the wisdom others have. How are the others doing?

What condition are the remaining birds in? Are they nice and plump? or a little on the lean side?

Wasting away has so many causes, one can be from being too good a parent, but rarely would a finch starve themselves to death. It may be a worm infestation or some thing else like Coccidiosis? Do you preventative treat for such?

That's part of a regular treatment in my aviary.Droppings on the cage bottom seemed relatively normal until the day I saw her drooping the way she was. She was put into a hospital cage immediately. It bothers me that her vent was so wet, and she had been sitting on the eggs. 5 of the 6 eggs are developing well, so far. I can only hope they are not now infected with somehting that will infect and kill the hatchlings. Which is why I am wondering if the adults can be treated while feeding the babies, so the babies will also get some preventative treatment.

The remaining parents seem to be doing quite well, plump and bright. No loose droppings.
