Rinse sprouted seed in Bleach solution?
Hi:
I was just reading on the Finch Info Center about sprouting seeds, and was surprised that it recommend rinsing with a bleach solution (5% bleach/ 95% water). I know it says to rinse well after to get rid of the bleach, but is this safe? Is there something else that the seeds can be rinsed in?

It's perfectly safe but if you don't want to use bleach you could use another product like VirkonS for example.

Even if I don't get 100% of the bleach off the sprouts?

Yes, bleach dissipates quickly when exposed to air.

Re: Rinse sprouted seed in Bleach solution?
I'm using Sparkle. It only needs a few drops so even if it's not the cheapest product, it lasts me for months. I also use it in the water of my fountain which I only change once a week.

I also have 2 parrotlets, 3 dogs, 1 snake and 3 freshwater fishtanks.

Re: Rinse sprouted seed in Bleach solution?
I wouldn't worry about the small amount of bleach left on the seeds. Some Gouldian breeders I know offer a solution of bleach water anytime they feel their stock has been exposed to bacteria.
Drinking public tap water contains bleach so unless you're giving them bottled water, they are already ingesting bleach.

Re: Rinse sprouted seed in Bleach solution?
When I give soaked or sprouted seed to my zebras, I use a few drops of apple cider vinegar during the soaking phase. I rinse it well and offer it on a flat dish, so excess water evaporates. I have never had a problem with mold etc.

Oh, OK.
Hadn't thought about some bleach being in drinking water....and good to know also that ACV is an option.
This forum is a great resource!
