Pumpkin

Post by flrancho » Sat Sep 03, 2011 7:28 am

Since I found out here a few months ago that pumpkin was good to feed my birds while we were out at the store last night I picked up a can of organic pumpkin and was planning on giving it a try today, but I had a few questions.

With a Mom who works in the animal vet field, I know that pumpkin is sometimes prescribed for animals that have loose stools. Will pumpkin have the same effect on finches? That being said, if I give them too much pumpkin, will they become constipated? To avoid this, how often should I give them pumpkin?

Secondly, that's a pretty good size can of pumpkin and it was the only size they had. Can I freeze the leftovers..... or how long will it keep in the fridge?

I give my finches fruit and veggies daily, but not very much. I think pumpkin can be frozen, but I don't know about the canned version. In the fridge, I would only leave it for a week, in a well sealed container. Now, I want some pumpkin pie.

You can add pumkin to cornbread mixes, bake and cool them th freeze just squeeze the air out of the bag. I imagine it can be frozen, try a little and see what happens after you thraw if it or contact the company and ask them....Libby makes pumpkin and may have a custom help website or contact number.

Yes canned pumpkin can be frozen. I have done it several times when I could only find large cans and needed a small one. I just put it in a ziploc freezer bag, and lay it flat in the freezer. It should keep fine for several months (I have used it as much as 6 months later, but it might last longer too).
